E3G is looking for a Policy Advisor to support its work to secure progress on the global coal-to-clean transition through international climate diplomacy venues such as the G7, G20 and COP. This new position will work closely with E3G colleagues and international partners to engage diplomatic actors on an accelerated phaseout of coal and increased investment in renewable power, including through coordinating and supporting civil society networks across the international energy diplomacy community.

Background

E3G is an independent climate change think tank with a global outlook. We are world leading strategists on the political economy of climate change, dedicated to achieving a safe climate for all.

We work on the frontier of the climate landscape tackling the barriers and advancing the solutions to a safe climate. Our goal is to translate climate politics, economics and policies into action. E3G is consistently ranked as one of the top ten most influential environmental think tanks in the world by the University of Pennsylvania’s Global Go To Think Tank Index.

Delivering a rapid, managed transition of the global power system from coal-to-clean, not via gas, is a fundamental condition to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Person Description

We are looking for an intellectually curious, enthusiastic person to help us deliver our goals. You are proactive and committed to collaboration and coalition-building in aid of achieving ambitious outcomes. You can think on your feet, condense complex information into simple, clear messages for varied stakeholders, and are an excellent communicator who is comfortable working with people from different countries and backgrounds. You will need to have excellent coordination skills and a strategic mindset while being able to deliver at pace.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support E3G’s work on driving progress on the coal-to-clean transition through international climate diplomacy venues and processes such as the G7, G20 and COP29.
  • Contribute to thought leadership and political analysis on how to advance coal-to-clean ambition as part of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) process, and act as a focal point for the team on this topic.
  • Develop and write clear, accessible and insightful analysis, policy briefings and presentations for diplomatic actors and policymakers with the goal of securing strong political signals from countries on phasing out coal and scaling up renewable energy.
  • Play an active role in leading an international energy diplomacy network of civil society partners, co-convened by E3G. This will involve coordinating with partners to jointly develop a global strategy for international power sector diplomacy.
  • Provide clear and accessible information and strategic advice to international partners and networks, to maintain momentum on advancing coal-to-clean outcomes through international climate diplomacy.
  • Support preparation and delivery of workshops and meetings internally and with external partners from across civil society, private sector, and diplomatic actors.
  • International travel may be required from time to time.

Experience and Skills

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline, such as climate change, energy policy, international relations, development, politics or economics.
  • Relevant professional experience in a related field, such as involvement in policy, research, advocacy or communications within a government or international organisation, think tank, civil society or research institute.
  • Experience at building and coordinating relationships and networks, and cooperating with diverse stakeholders, partner organisations and coalitions.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of an international team, with a high degree of cultural sensitivity.
  • Well-developed communication skills, adept at presenting and conveying information and arguments to colleagues and partners in a clear, accessible way, both written and verbally.
  • Analytical skills, with ability to think creatively and critically about complex information from a range of sources and make evidence-based recommendations.
  • Demonstrate a high level of initiative, be proactive and well-organised and focused on delivering high-quality outputs, results and outcomes, sometimes to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

What we offer

  • Permanent, full-time position.
  • Flexible working arrangements and hybrid working approach.
  • 25 vacation days + additional leave between Christmas and New Year.

  • Yearly process for remuneration review.
