POLICY ADVISOR, INTERNATIONAL TRANSITION PLAN NETWORK (ITPN), BERLIN OR LONDON

This Policy Advisor post will sit in E3G’s specialist ITPN program which focus on private sector transition plans, within the wider Finance & Resilience team and working with a range of other E3G teams.

The ITPN programme sits within E3G’s Finance & Resilience team. This team focuses on the appropriate political response to climate risk, and on the political and policy changes required to enable financial flows for the global climate transition.

The International Transition Plan Network (ITPN) was launched by E3G at COP29. It supports the development of global norms for transition plans by the private sector and supports climate policy that makes best use of transition plans.

Private sector climate transition plans are an important new tool for navigating the climate transition. They offer opportunities to support climate ambition, manage climate risk, and contribute to a climate-safe global economy. It will be crucial that new policies and regulations enable interoperability while meeting climate-related goals.

The ITPN Policy Advisor is a new position which sits in the ITPN Program at E3G. The ITPN Program is supported by an energetic, dedicated and expert team of six people. Prior to November 2024 team members provided the Secretariat to the Transition Plan Taskforce. Now this team manages the ITPN as well as engaging in broader E3G activities related to private sector transition plans, working closely with other teams which focus on financial regulation in UK, EU, US and internationally, within the overall Finance & Resilience team.

The Policy Advisor will report to Kate Ryan, the ITPN’s Strategic Partnerships Manager. We anticipate this post being London-based but are also open to applications from candidates who could work from E3G’s Berlin office.

Key Responsibilities

• Thought leadership and influence: Communicate in an impactful and evidence-based way to internal and external audiences and advise internally on the global outlook for transition plans, contributing to the overall ITPN Program strategy and execution.

• Expert policy analysis: Actively track the international landscape on transition plans, keeping up to date on major reports and multilateral statements. Maintain a database of key materials and advise the Strategic Partnerships Manager, Technical Lead and Head of ITPN about key developments.

• Relationship building and convening: Lead and support the development of strategic relationships with key public sector and corporate stakeholders. Lead the organisation of high-level roundtables and meetings of the ITPN Members and Advisory Group.

• Technical leadership and communication: Potential to lead one or more international working groups on a technical topic of key interest to the ITPN. This would include thought leadership, identifying strategic aims, convening key stakeholders and influencing national and international processes.

• Event management: Lead on specific event planning and execution throughout the year at key multilateral moments, e.g. IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings, G7/20 meetings and COP30. Lead on briefings for key events and meetings where needed.

• Working across E3G: understanding and maintaining links with other teams with work relevant to transition plans and multilateralism (e.g. UK and EU Sustainable Finance teams). Act as the ITPN’s main person of contact for one or more of these teams. Support the wider ITPN team with administrative functions e.g. setting up meetings and maintaining the ITPN mailbox.

• International travel may be required.

Experience and Skills

Essential:

• Awareness of international climate change policy and politics, and multilateral processes.

• Exceptional organisational skills to set up and run high level roundtables and meetings of the ITPN Members and Advisory Group.

• Strong communication skills with the ability to write clearly for a variety of audiences.

• A motivation to contribute to solutions in the international climate policy and political landscape.

• A strong teamwork mentality and flexible approach.

• Experience within the public or third sector relating to climate change (e.g. public service, multilateral organisation, NGO or standard setter) or within the corporate sector relating to sustainable finance/ disclosure/ reporting (e.g. financial institution or corporate or membership body on climate/sustainable finance).

• At least 3-5 years of relevant professional experience

Desirable:

• Study of climate, sustainable finance, public policy or similar areas, at undergraduate level.

• E3G offers a reward and benefits package which compares well with other organisations within our sector. The indicative salary range in the UK for this position is between £40,400 and £44,000 dependant on experience. The salary range for candidates in Berlin is between €45,000 and €49,000.

• Yearly process for remuneration review.

E3G is unable to provide any relocation assistance to candidates who would need to move in order to take up this position. Occasional international travel may be required.
