Natural Resources Technician

About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultant's Phoenix Arizona office is seeking a Natural Resource Field Technician for biological field surveys, Environmental Inspections and monitoring. The position will be both field and office based and requires an educational background and experience in natural resource management, wildlife management, range science, botany, or a related field.

This position is a temporary position.  Work will take place in an outdoor environment where the climate, weather and terrain can be demanding. The position may involve an irregular schedule, extended hours, and time away from home for up to weeks at a time. In such situations, we pay per diem and travel expenses at or above industry standards.

What you will accomplish

  • Work with the field lead, senior natural resource lead, and the project manager on implementation and completion of the project work.
  • Conduct field work, following set vegetation, soil, and habitat sampling protocols.
  • Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and scientific tools and equipment under arduous field conditions.
  • Support additional fieldwork as needed
  • Follow company and client safety protocols and maintain safe working environment.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Bachelor's degree botany, rangeland science, biology, natural resource management, wildlife management, soils, ecology or related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) months’ of related experience.
  • Prior experience conducting native plant surveys and inventories in Arizona.
  • GPS experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous report writing experience.
  • Prior experience with migratory bird nest surveys.
  • Certification for burrowing owl surveys
  • College classes in vegetation identification, soil morphology, botany, or wildlife habitat.
  • Knowledge of vegetation survey and monitoring techniques.

Additional Information:

  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to drive a 4WD vehicle on backcountry roads.
  • Ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) screening.
