About the opportunity
SWCA’s growing Southborough (Boston), Massachusetts office is seeking to fill the position of a Natural Resources Team Lead. The Natural Resources Team Lead is responsible for providing leadership within our office and region by managing staff, projects, and clients.
The Boston office offers a collaborative and supportive work environment, and currently specializes in natural resources assessment, environmental permitting and compliance. The successful candidate will have a depth of experience in environmental permitting in Massachusetts and surrounding states and will have proven leadership capabilities.

This position is a regular, full-time, salaried position, reporting to the Boston Principal Office Lead. The successful candidate should be located within regular commuter distance to Southborough office or able to regularly commute to the office. A hybrid working arrangement is also possible.
Salary will be based on individual qualifications and experience.
What you will accomplish
The Natural Resources Team Lead will manage current opportunities while participating in the development of a forward-looking plan for their team. This position will require highly developed critical thinking skills to recognize and solve problems proactively and independently, as well as mitigate risks, creative thinking, and a focus on client satisfaction.
- Organizational leadership
- Provide highly effective, dynamic management and leadership to SWCA’s natural resources program and staff. Help align employees to their annual career development goals and build teams to support program and individual employee development.
- Supervise and mentor natural resources project managers, technical staff, and field personnel, while promoting a culture of teamwork, engagement, quality service, and customer satisfaction.
- Work closely with the Principal Office Lead to grow the Natural Resources team.
- Promote a culture of teamwork, engagement, quality service, safety, and customer satisfaction.
- Provide general support to the team relating to subject matter resources, training opportunities, regulatory and research updates.
- Technical leadership
- Serve as a project manager for a variety of natural resource projects.
- Provide senior level quality assurance/quality control reviews of deliverables prepared by other team members.
- Stay informed with changing environmental regulations and keep staff and clients updated on changes and how they apply to our projects.
- Prepare or oversee project deliverables, such as environmental resource reports, biological assessments, wetland reports, natural resources deliverables related to MEPA / NEPA, Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, and other regulatory/permitting/compliance requirements.
- Prepare protocols and supervise surveys for sensitive habitats and species, including general surveys, protocol-level surveys, and pre / post-construction surveys.
- Client leadership
- Develop strong relationships with existing clients while executing strategic analysis, marketing and sales for new clients.
- Engage with the office business development team to evaluate changing market conditions and strategic sales opportunities at a regional and sub-regional level.
- Lead proposal efforts and help mentor sell-doer mentality in all employees.
- Develop strong and productive relationships within industry organizations and with agency staff to expand the regional client base in line with the region’s strategic goals.
Experience and qualifications for success
Required
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s (B.A. or B.S.) degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, or related field.
- A minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in Natural resources consulting.
- A minimum of three (3) years of natural resources (or related) project management experience, including developing and implementing budgets, schedules, and scopes of work from pre-field tasks to final report preparation.
- Previous experience with federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations in Massachusetts and New England.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to pass a motor vehicle screening.
Preferred
- Demonstrated experience in supervising, mentoring, and providing leadership for other professionals.
- Professional Certifications including PWS, NHCWS, Registered (Professional) Soil Scientist.
- Experience with permitting and compliance for utility and energy related projects.
- Demonstrated business development success and established credibility with federal and state agencies and clients, as well as success in proposal writing.

An employee in this Boston, MA - based position can expect a salary of: Team Lead - $81,900/year to $107,016/year. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
