Mine Closure Consultant (Bilingual EN-FR)

IISD serves as the Secretariat for the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF). The IGF works with governments to advance their sustainable development goals with effective laws, policies, and regulations for the mining sector. It is devoted to optimizing the benefits of mining to achieve poverty reduction, inclusive growth, social development, and environmental stewardship. The IGF serves as a unique global venue for dialogue between its 81 member country governments and mining companies, industry associations, and civil society.

We are currently looking for a Mine Closure Consultant who is bilingual (English–French) to support the IGF Secretariat. The consultant will support the design and delivery of training workshops on mine closure and post-mining transition. This position is an immediate short-term consultancy with an opportunity for future contracts. International travel will be required.

Qualifications

• A university degree from a recognized university in a related discipline, such as geology, engineering, environmental management, or an equivalent discipline.

Experience

• At least 8 years of relevant professional experience in the mining sector, including mine closure planning and implementation.
• Experience on mine sites addressing mine closure and post-mining transition.
• Experience developing and delivering training or capacity building on mining and mine closure topics.
• Experience with mine closure policies, regulations, and/or guidance documents.
• Experience working in Africa is considered an asset.

Technical Skills

• Ability to create mine closure workshop training materials, including practical exercises and case studies.
• Ability to facilitate training sessions with government officials from mining ministries.
• Ability to work independently to meet tight deadlines.
• Knowledge of social aspects of mine closure and post-mining land use is considered an asset.
• Knowledge of environmental and social impact assessment and community engagement is considered an asset.

Location: Remote. IISD will not be applying for residency and work permits for this position on behalf of the applicant.
