Mid Atlantic Natural Services Leader

About the Position

VHB’s growing Mid-Atlantic Environmental Services practice is looking for a senior-level Environmental Scientist to help lead a growing Natural Sciences team, currently made up of 10 environmental scientists and GIS analysts across Virginia and North Carolina.  This individual will manage junior and rising staff and will serve as a mentor for career advancement, both in field techniques, regulatory strategy development and client outreach and relationship building.

Base Skill Sets:

• Wetland and stream delineations
• Knowledge and understanding of Section 404/401 rules and regulations
• Rare, threatened and endangered species surveys
• Plant identification and vegetation Inventory
• GPS, mobile technology, and data management
• GIS, geodatabases, and basic mapmaking
• Data entry, research, and analysis
• Writing and technical reporting
• Ability to communicate with both regulators and clients throughout the regulatory process
• Environmental permit support and strategy
• Project and task management
• Project budget preparation, scope development and proposal preparation
• Business development and client outreach and relationship building

Responsibilities:

• Play a key role in project development and management from scoping through execution, which will include natural resource inventories, jurisdictional determinations, regulatory strategy development, alternatives analysis, impact assessments, and permit applications.
• Management and training of junior field staff to guide their career development as consulting scientists and regulatory specialists.
• Requires the ability to collaborate with planners, engineers, architects and other professionals in the execution of a wide variety of projects for public and private sector clients.

Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to identify flora within the Mid-Atlantic region, using the Flora of Virginia and/or other technical keys/regional references.
• Technical writing and statistical analysis
• Ability to work independently and as part of team in remote field locations and/or in challenging weather conditions
• Ability to travel on short notice, at night, and/or on weekend shifts, and potentially for extended periods of time
• Ability to think critically in the field and office
• Excellent attention to detail, team oriented, and flexible

Qualifications:

• 8+ years of experience in environmental science, natural resources and associated regulations required, 11+ years of experience preferred
• B.A in Environmental Science, Biology, Fisheries and Wildlife, Ecology, or Natural Resources (Masters preferred)
• Coursework in plant identification, plant ecology, wildlife species, wetland identification, and/or aquatic habitats
• Extensive fieldwork experience in natural habitats, whether through coursework or professional experience
