Mechanical Engineer – Process Improvement

Job Summary:

Reporting to the VP of North American Spoke Operations, the Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the continuous improvement and development of new processes that support Li-Cycle’s network of lithium-ion battery recycling plants (“Spokes”). The ideal candidate is expected to pro-actively identify where processes and machinery can be adapted and optimized to ensure efficient process flow, cost effectiveness, and product quality.  They must possess strong project management skills and be capable of developing and implementing new technology from initial concepts through to project execution.  The candidate will be required to travel to all our current North American operations as well as support in the operational readiness of new plants.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the continuous improvement of Li-Cycle’s Spoke technology
  • Demonstrate basic understanding of machinery, assist with troubleshooting, and recommend improvements
  • Identification of manufacturing process and equipment improvements and include a cost benefit analysis to allow senior evaluation and approval.
  • Support the operational readiness of new plants and new processes
  • Act as the project manager for all assigned projects
    • Review of technical documentation (drawings and specifications) and development/monitoring of project budget from an “Owner’s Engineer” perspective
    • Review and selection of vendors and general contractors through an RFP process
    • Assist with construction activities including budget, productivity, progress, and safety of employees and subcontractors. Attend construction site meetings and conduct site visits, as needed
    • Provide field support as needed for project engineering and construction teams
    • Coordination with regulatory groups to facilitate communication and information exchange for obtaining the necessary approvals and maintaining compliance
  • Create and maintain work Instructions, standard work, and troubleshooting guides

Job Qualifications:

  • University degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 5+ years of directly related work experience preferably in an industrial setting
  • Ability to converse and collaborate with multiple departments spanning multiple disciplines
  • Excellent grasp of diverse, fundamental mechanical engineering concepts and relationships
  • Highly motivated and self-directed capable of multi-tasking, and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Economic modelling and analysis experience considered an asset
  • Ability to create and review technical documentation
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office programs and CAD
  • Programming ability an asset
  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude

  • May be exposed to hazards associated with manufacturing
  • May be required to use PPE
