About the Job
The position of Marine Scientist/Marine Technician will provide assistance to various internal and external clients and projects. These projects may span across the offshore wind and marine renewable energy sectors, energy transition initiatives, and environmental baseline and monitoring programs. The selected candidate can anticipate spending up to 120 days at sea annually. Offshore assignments can occur globally and may involve working 12-hour shifts around the clock, lasting from a few days to several weeks.
During offshore assignments, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of Integral's oceanographic equipment, including sophisticated underwater sensors and sampling systems. This role includes leading the deployment of Integral's equipment and supporting partners' equipment operations at sea. Our offshore team represents Integral and contributes to enhancing the company's reputation in the field. Thus, we seek individuals with a mission-driven, collaborative, and curious mindset, capable of working well in teams to support our goals, those of our clients, and overall project success.
While onshore, you will assist in maintaining, organizing, and coordinating logistics for Integral's field equipment. Responsibilities include supporting equipment maintenance and field logistics planning, ensuring it is stocked with necessary consumables and spares for upcoming projects are available, conducting inspections, calibrations, and repairs to equipment as needed, and supporting project mobilization and demobilization, including logistics for both people and equipment movements.
We are looking to recruit two individuals, with one candidate being sought for the East Coast, ideally located between Providence, RI, and New Bedford, MA, and the other for the West Coast, ideally situated between San Francisco, CA, and Santa Cruz, CA.
Responsibilities
As a Marine Scientist/Marine Technician, your job functions will include, but not be limited to the following offshore and onshore responsibilities:
Offshore:
Operate underwater sampling and imaging equipment, including sediment profile imaging and plan-view camera systems (SPI-PV), towed underwater video, remotely operated vehicles, scanning sonar systems, underwater acoustic positioning systems (USBL), conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) systems, acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs), environmental DNA samplers, sediment corers, grab samplers, and water sampling bottles (Niskin or GoFlo).
Guarantee that data and image collection at sea adheres to Integral's stringent quality control standards and aligns with contractual obligations. This includes conducting data quality assurance and quality control procedures, making in-field focus adjustments and calibrations as necessary, and verifying file names for accuracy.
Acquire and uphold essential Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) trainings along with relevant certifications to ensure adherence to safety regulations and standards. These certifications may encompass OGUK medical, BOSIET, or GWO safety at sea certifications.
Onshore:
Qualifications
Applicants should possess an associate's or bachelor's (B.A. or B.S.) degree in Marine Technology, Marine Science, or a closely related field (such as hydrogeology, geology, geophysics, environmental science, environmental or civil engineering, or another technical discipline).
A minimum of three years of relevant experience is required, including extended offshore deployments on vessels for data collection support. This experience requirement can be fulfilled through a combination of education, military service, and/or equivalent professional experience. Proficiency in deploying and operating oceanographic, geophysical, or geotechnical sensors and systems at sea is expected. Training will be provided for well-qualified applicants lacking specific system or sensor experience.
Candidates with direct experience operating SPI-PV systems preferred, but not required.
Experience with geospatial mapping programs such as: ArcGIS, ArcPro, Global Mapper, QGIS, or similar tools and data outputs.
Possess knowledge of fundamental concepts in underwater digital photography, videography, and seafloor mapping methodologies.
Understanding of industry standards and best practices for inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and storing marine equipment and oceanographic sensors.
Proficiency in field and laboratory methodologies, including experience in collecting and processing marine data for subsequent laboratory analysis. This encompasses areas such as sedimentology, benthic ecology/taxonomy, chemical/biological oceanography, and more.
Proficiency with current MS Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Quantitative and problem-solving skills.
Good organizational abilities and time management skills.
Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
A desire to grow both intellectually and professionally.
Special Requirements:
Annual Salary Range: $65,000 – $110,000 (Employees who work extended offshore deployments may be eligible for additional compensation under Integral's exchange time policy. Additional details will be provided during the interview process.)
An employee’s total compensation package includes annual salary, company-subsidized (employee and family) medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) participation with a company-match of 1% to 4% of annual compensation, company-paid life and short- and long-term disability, paid sick leave (80 hours per year), paid vacation (determined by title at hire), paid holidays (9 days per year), and the potential for an annual discretionary bonus based on company performance. Paid time off will be pro-rated to reflect part-time scheduled hours, if applicable.
