About the Position
The Managing Director of Program Operations oversees the operational and logistical success of CBED’s regional programs across our national profile. This includes CBED’s educator pipeline programs - Teacher Academy, Freedom Schools Literacy Academy (FSLA) Summer Program, FSLA After-School Tutoring, and Future Black Educators College Fellowship. The Managing Director will be charged with overseeing all aspects of operational management with the objective of ensuring our best-in-class programs consistently achieve and exceed established goals designed to meet the needs of the aspiring educators and children we serve. The Managing Director will work closely with the COO to execute our strategic plan, provide top-level management support and leadership to a team of Regional Directors, Program Manager and Data/Recruitment Specialist, and will represent CBED externally to champion the organization’s model and work on a national level.
Responsibilities include:
- Codify programming to support the national expansion of the Black Teacher Pipeline
- Support the design of a systemic approach to support consistent, continuous, and coherent regional and national expansion throughout the 12-year pipeline model that will recruit a growing number of aspiring educators
- Lead a team of Regional Program Directors who are providing on-the-ground leadership and program implementation in their regions and central office program staff
- Work in collaboration with with senior leadership to prepare for program implementation in new communities; present program information to key stakeholders, solicit understanding and buy-in to the program models, and lead the efforts to prepare for implementation
- Manage budgets, outcomes, and implementation associated with grants attached to pipeline program
- Establish and maintain systems to monitor program staff performance in achieving organizational and program goals
- Build coalitions, relationships, and partnerships with key stakeholders including school districts, charters schools, institutions of higher education, community members and orgs, political organizations, state departments of education, and public sector organizations
- Cultivate the trust of key stakeholders by actively listening and seeking to understand their views and needs; follow through on commitments and promises with an appropriate sense of urgency
- Create a process for tracking all scholars and apprentices that enter Pathway programming to ensure CBED supports their journey through education
- Operate with an exceptional level of self-awareness, humility and integrity in all interactions across partnership building
- Other duties as assigned
Background and experience expectations:
- Bachelor’s degree in education or similar field
- Minimum of 8-10 years professional experience in a management position with at least five (5) years of successful demonstrated experience leading and expanding program operations, in a non-profit or education setting (strongly preferred)
- Successful track record of working in an urban setting with staff, students and families from diverse racial, ethnic, linguistic and socio-economic backgrounds
- Strong management experience (preferably leaders and/or educators) with a track record of success in leading and sustaining a high-performing organization
- Ability to structure tasks, establish priorities and set and manage employee performance
- Ability to balance multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced evolving environment
- Commitment to Freedom Schools’ principles and outcomes and leader and teacher development
- Proven interpersonal skills, characterized by the ability to build positive relationships, solve problems, mediate conflict, and exercise sound judgment
- Strategic thinker and visionary
- Strong public presentation and communication skills to represent CBED

Other work requirements:
- Must have access to a dedicated workspace, phone, and internet access
- Must be able to travel to program sites and meet with key stakeholders (nationwide); travel will be around 25%
- Communicate effectively with people/groups in multiple settings within and outside the organization
- Effectively utilize existing and emerging technology to achieve required results
- Some lifting of program materials may be required at times (up to 25 pounds)
