Schedule: Full-time

Location: Remote, with minimum 25% of travel required

Reports to: M4BL Deputy Director of Finance and Operations

Salary: $88,000 - $103,000 annually, with full health benefits for employee and dependents, employer-funded retirement plan, remote work stipend, and 28 days of vacation

MOVEMENT FOR BLACK LIVES

The Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) is an ecosystem of organizations and individuals creating a shared vision and strategy to win rights, and resources for Black people. Building on the legacy and strategies of past movements, the Movement for Black Lives has created a broad political home for Black organizers, activists, and their organizations. Our ecosystem is held together by politics of abolition, anti-capitalism and radical Black Queer Feminisms and a value system that fights for the marginalized amongst us. In this phase of our growth, M4BL is looking for new staff members to join an expanding team that will help innovate new administrative and financial systems designed to center Black liberation and freedom.

Position Summary

The Finance Lead provides critical support for M4BL’s financial operations. As a core member of the administrative team, the Finance Lead supports the Movement for Black Lives’ work by (A) managing Accounts Payable (B) providing accounts receivable and general accounting support, (C) ensuring that all M4BL financial and administrative files and data are secure and appropriately accessible. The Finance Lead reports to the Deputy Director of Finance and Operations.

Essential Functions:

Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable, Grants

  • Maintain accurate records and general ledger accounts
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Process regular accounts payable on a weekly basis:
    • Review, assess, and enter payment information into the accounting system for approval by the Deputy Director of Finance & Operations.
  • Prepare and submit C4 cost sharing invoices
  • Serve as a liaison between the accounting department, staff, and vendors to ensure accurate AP documentation
    • Communicate with staff and vendors as needed in relation to accounts payable timing, payment updates, and documents needed to process payments
  • Bank and Credit card reconciliation
    • Assist with monthly close process - prepare journal entries and account reconciliations of all ledger accounts
  • Maintain digital financial records including invoices, W-9 forms, and supporting accounts payable documents.
  • Support the disbursement of grant/community investment funds by:
    • Submitting grantee data to Fiscal Sponsor grants team for processing as needed
    • Uploading grantee data into the accounts payable system
    • Troubleshooting data errors and working to reconcile them with the appropriate M4BL staff leads
    • Tracking the timing of disbursements and ensuring accurate disbursement rolls for each grant payout
  • Support accounts receivable by:
    • Updating revenue tracking tools used by the team to ensure restricted grant compliance and all grant funds are properly tracked
    • Pulling grant expenses for and preparing grant reports
    • Attending team meetings related to revenue tracking
    • Maintaining communication with the Resource Development and accounting teams to ensure documentation of pledges and funds received
  • Support ongoing improvements of M4BL’s accounts payable and accounts receivable systems

Technology, Organization, and Compliance

  • Provide communications support via note-taking and documentation of finance meetings and team retreats.
  • Maintain files of documents submitted by grantees, vendors, consultants, and contractors by aggregating them in our CRM, and/or other cloud-based filing systems as appropriate.
  • Help maintain a list of current vendors and solutions providers
  • Communicate with staff regarding program and policy updates as needed and requested by the Director of Finance and Operations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Prior experience working with Social Justice Movement organizations
  • General Accounting background
  • Experience in nonprofit management
  • Two+ years of experience managing accounts payable in a nonprofit setting.
  • Experience with budget and accounting software such as Quickbooks, Questica, Netsuite etc

Under the fundamental idea that we can achieve more together than we can separately.
