FUNCTION:
The Livestock Facilitator is responsible for ensuring that backyard chicken producers adopt animal health and
production technologies, knowledge and skills to increase chicken production and that Community Agrovet
Entrepreneurs (CAVEs) provide sustainable technical services and technology to smallholder farmers. S/he will
coordinate with different public and private sectors to strengthen market linkages, accessibility to markets,
and increase access to finance and leverage resources to scale up backyard chicken enterprises and other
agriculture value chains for the wider benefit and impact of smallholder farmers. The Facilitator will also
support individual farmers/producers, self-help groups (SHGs) and agricultural cooperatives (ACs) to
determine, plan and implement the agribusiness and agriculture value chains tailored to their needs and
market demands.
RESPONSIBILIIES AND DELIVERABLES: (including approximate percentage effort)
Support capacity building on livestock technology (40%):
• Facilitate the selection of appropriate backyard chicken breeds.
• Ensure the integration of a feeding program into production systems.
• Develop poultry models and explore technology for improving the poultry farms.
• Facilitate the adoption of climate smart animal production practices and technology.
• Assist in developing a training and capacity building strategy and training manuals for poultry and
other livestock.
• Facilitate the adoption of improved forage and fodder production through nursery centers or other
innovative methods.
• Develop a system to monitor the performance of animals and strive for optimum production,
ensuring animal well-being.
• Appropriately respond to issues such as unusual animal mortality, infertility, unidentified diseases,
and disease outbreaks in projects.
• Oversee the quality of veterinary equipment, vaccines, medicine, etc.

• Document and disseminate best practices and lessons learned in relation to animal well-being
implementation.
• Organize and facilitate trainings and workshops for CAVEs/technicians and project partners on
improved animal health and husbandry.
• Provide technical backstopping and mobilize CAVEs and technicians through regular coaching, follow
up and state-of-the-art technical guidance as appropriate to ensure improved livestock management
practices are adopted by project participants.
• Ensure CAVEs are sufficiently trained to provide training and veterinary services to poultry
producers.
Strengthening Self-help groups and Agricultural Cooperative – 25%
• Facilitate the formation and capacity building of SHGs and ACs.
• Facilitate building social capital and resource mobilization through trainings on values-based holistic
community development and Heifer’s 12 Cornerstones to SHGs and ACs.
• Provide capacity building for ACs on bookkeeping, entrepreneurship and business plan development.
• Facilitate annual Cooperative Assessment Tools (CAT) assessments to identify areas for
strengthening the AC-owned viable agribusinesses.
Market development and linkages, access to finance (20%):
• Work with partners and ACs to identify markets and develop the contract farming to sell agriculture
products and commodities.
• Connect private sectors and companies to provide quality agriculture inputs to smallholder farmers
and ACs.
• Create a platform by working with relevant partners in providing updated market information
including potential agriculture products to smallholder farmers.
• Work with SHGs, ACs and partners to establish business hubs or collecting centers where farmers bulk
their products to permanent markets.
• Facilitate in identifying and connecting ACs with MFIs and/or banks to increase credit or financial
services for smallholder farmers and ACs.
• Identify branding options for market promotion of ACs and farmers’ products.
• Facilitate in organizing multi-stakeholder consultation meetings, workshops, and Business to
Business (B2B) meetings for better market linkages.
• Coordinate and organize trainings to SHGs and ACs on institutional capacity, LINK methodology
and Business Model Canvas.
Planning and reporting (10%):
• Plan and implement the project workplan and ensure the project activities and budget expenses
are on track according to the workplan.
• Seek innovations in project implementation and pilot new initiatives.
• Prepare project monthly, quarterly, semester, and annual reports including project impact stories.
• Participate in project design, developing annual operational plans and budget plans.
May perform other job-related duties as assigned (5%)
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
• Diploma or associate degree in Agriculture science or Animal Science, plus at least one year of
experience in fields related to agriculture value chain and agro-enterprise development
(specifically livestock and/or fish enterprises).
• Knowledge and experience in agriculture value chain and agro-enterprise development
• Experience in agriculture extension in poultry and aquaculture is a plus
