About The Center for Black Educator Development
The Center for Black Educator Development exists to (re)build a national Black Teacher Pipeline to achieve educational and racial justice by ensuring there is equity in the recruiting, training, hiring, and retention of quality educators that reflect the cultural background and share common socio-political interests of the students they serve. Launched in June 2019, the Center for Black Educator Development is revolutionizing education by dramatically increasing the number of Black educators so that low-income Black and other disenfranchised students can reap the full benefits of a quality public education. Learn about our key strategies to build a national Black Teacher Pipeline by visiting our website at www.thecenterblacked.org.
About the Position
During the summer, CBED conducts a seven-week apprenticeship program for aspiring high school and college-aged educators called the Freedom School Literacy Academy (FSLA). The goal of FSLA is to affirm low-income Black students by substantially increasing the number of Black teachers working with Black students, with a specific focus on social justice.
As the Junior Servant Leader Coach (JSLC), you have experience coaching and mentoring youth, teaching high school students, and writing curriculum. The JSLC will be responsible for supporting the development of a high quality, academic-centered summer enrichment experience for Junior Servant Leaders, scholars, and their parents. Junior Servant Leaders (JSLs) attend weekly professional development sessions, receiving feedback and coaching in an effort to nurture an ecosystem of academic support, youth development and accountability. The Center commits to equipping future educators with pedagogical understandings and tools that extend beyond the traditionally euro-centric models currently prevalent in the field of education. By doing so, the Center hopes that our JSLs will emerge from their apprenticeship interested in the field of education upon graduation. The Junior Servant Leader Coach will also be part of the onsite leadership and support the day-to-day logistics of the site.
This is an in-person, seasonal position from April to August 2023. Participants are asked to be available on a limited basis from April to mid-June for training, recruitment and hiring support. From June to August participants will be required to work 5 days a week.
