About The Center for Black Educator Development

The Center for Black Educator Development exists to (re)build a national Black Teacher Pipeline to achieve educational and racial justice by ensuring there is equity in the recruiting, training, hiring, and retention of quality educators that reflect the cultural background and share common socio-political interests of the students they serve. Launched in June 2019, the Center for Black Educator Development is revolutionizing education by dramatically increasing the number of Black educators so that low-income Black and other disenfranchised students can reap the full benefits of a quality public education. About the Position

As one of the Teaching Pathway programs that CBED offers, Freedom Schools Literacy Academy (FSLA) is a 4-week apprenticeship summer program that prepares high-school and college-aged aspiring educators by way of providing literacy intervention to elementary school scholars. Reporting to Site Lead, the Junior Servant Leader (JSL) Coach serves as an on-site instructional leader by owning the professional development of JSLs and the instructional integrity of programming. They provide individualized coaching to JSLs to ensure scholars are receiving high-quality small group literacy instruction and JSLs are equipped with black pedagogical understandings and instructional skills. Through participation in FSLA, it is our aim that high school students will strongly consider becoming future educational leaders. As such, the coach works to ensure this apprenticeship experience is enriching and rewarding for JSLs, being what might be their first exposure to the teaching profession.

This is an in-person seasonal position from Thursday, June 20th, 2024 to Friday, August 2nd, 2024. This includes 2 weeks of training and 4 weeks of programming. JSL Coaches are required to work Monday through Friday, from 7:45am-3:45pm.
