Journalist and Editor

IWPR (Institute for War and Peace Reporting) is an independent non-profit organization that works with the media and civil society to bring about positive change in conflict zones, closed societies, and countries in transition processes around the world.

IWPR is looking for an Editorial Coordinator for its Latin America and Caribbean office to work on a project focused on Cuba. The chosen person will be familiar with journalism in repressive political contexts, preferably Cuba, and will be responsible for designing and implementing a program to form and mentor new journalists, as well as for engaging with news outlets seeking support.

This position will report to the Regional Manager of Journalism and Media Programs for Latin America and the Caribbean and will work remotely. The ideal person for this position has solid experience as a journalist and/or journalism editor in Latin America, a proven project management record, and excellent interpersonal relationships.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement a training program to form and mentor new journalists who will work in a repressive political context.
• Create the syllabus for each module in the training program in consultation with management, area coordinators, and subject matter experts.
• Contract and manage experienced journalism trainers to provide synchronous and asynchronous training and mentorship.
• Deliver synchronous and asynchronous training and mentorship and monitor individual participant progress.
• Engage with target news outlets seeking support to determine eligibility, diagnose their needs and agree on the terms of the support.
• Manage the delivery of different types of support for media outlets in an effective, timely manner.
• Ensure organizational policies are strictly followed at all times.
• Cultivate relationships and maintain contact with journalists and news outlets’ representatives.
• Work with IWPR staff to document and keep project documentation and monitoring and evaluation information organized and up-to-date.
• Work with the IWPR team in the creation and application of methodologies to evaluate the program.
• Ensure the appropriate security protocols are in place to ensure the well-being of beneficiaries and staff at all times.

Education

• Master's degree in Journalism, Communication, or another relevant area. A solid experience record of more than 10 years in journalism may be valued in lieu of a master's degree.
• Project management studies are a plus.

Experience

• A solid record of working in journalism in Latin America and the Caribbean, including at least 10 years working with Cuban news outlets and journalists.
• Have personal networks and contacts with organizations and institutions dedicated to promoting and strengthening investigative journalism, particularly in Cuba and/or other countries with restrictive environments.
• Advanced English and a high level of Spanish.
• Experience teaching journalism and/or in the development and execution of training to strengthen journalism capacities, including familiarity with key methodologies and tools.
• Extensive experience in data collection, analysis, and presentation, using quantitative and qualitative methods.
• Experience working in international and diverse environments.
• Experience in media development, press freedom, or human rights programs will be an advantage.
• Proven record engaging with news outlets, negotiating support agreements, monitoring progress, and correcting course as needed.

• Flexibility and creativity to adapt projects to changes that may occur or to lessons learned.
• Ability to innovate, recommend and lead new ideas and solutions based on facts.
• Willingness to work with colleagues remotely across time zones.
