ABOUT OUTRIGHT ACTION INTERNATIONAL

Founded in 1990, Outright Action International strives to help lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) people live safer, healthier, and more empowered lives worldwide. With staff in 16 countries and global headquarters in New York City, Outright documents human rights violations, helps resource LGBTIQ movements and allies, and advocates for the rights of LGBTIQ people.

Outright is currently seeking an internationally minded intern for our United Nations Program**.** This person will have experience academically and/or professionally with international spaces focused on Queer Human Rights. This position will be based in New York, City and will report to the United Nations Program Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the research team with desk-based research on subjects such as LGBTIQ inclusion in humanitarian relief efforts, sustainable development and LGBTIQ equality, and violence and discrimination in particular country contexts.
  • Draft a range of materials, such as background briefings, advocacy letters and social media posts.
  • Monitor positive and negative legal and policy developments worldwide, including criminalization of same-sex relations, criminalization of gender diversity, non-discrimination legislation, access to legal gender recognition, freedom of association and expression, and changes in family law.
  • Update web-based resources to reflect new legal and policy developments.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong writing skills in English.
  • Ability to conduct research independently and organize findings into different formats, including short reports, tables and spreadsheets.
  • Familiarity with human rights issues affecting LGBTIQ people in various parts of the world.
  • Proficiency in additional languages other than English is desirable.
