THE ROLE: The Condition Assessment Engineer (CAE) Intern will gain experience in and use technical knowledge and skills to provide condition assessment of critical water and wastewater pipelines. The work includes analyzing condition data to make recommendations that will influence long-term maintenance and management plans for the pipelines. The candidate will learn applicable design standards and structural analysis, perform pipeline forensics and visual inspections, and learn about the specific technologies available within Assessment Services (the business unit); detailed knowledge of when to use each of the technologies and the limitations of each to collect condition assessment data.

The hourly rate for an intern is dependent on a variety of factors including major, year in school and geographic location. The average hourly rate for an intern is between $21.00 - $27.00/hour. Locations of internships will vary based on the specified project and function, and will either be on-site, hybrid or fully remote.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyzes multiple data points to create technical client reports; inclusive of conclusions and recommendations that will help clients turn an inspection or series of inspections into meaningful pipeline management plans
  • Perform a variety of pipeline calculations, including but not limited to pipe loading, design checks and hydraulics/surge analysis
  • Perform pipeline forensic work as part of pipe failure investigations, interventions from acoustic fiber optic (AFO) monitoring or other inspections, verify pipeline results (i.e. wall loss, wire breaks), and pipeline degradation mechanisms for water and wastewater
  • Perform sounding inspections on prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) and visual inspections of all pipelines (including metallic) using SOP’s, and under the supervision of a CAE, as the basis for observations
  • Participate in, under the supervision of a Sr. CAE, in client meetings to further support proposals or findings included in the client technical report
  • Participate in training for First Aid/CPR/AED, Fall Arrest, and Confined Space in order to perform field work opportunities
  • Participation in Xylem Watermark volunteer activities

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university for a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering
  • Preferred, but not required, to have related field experience in engineering
  • Ability to excel in a team-oriented environment; developing and contributing subject matter expertise
  • Ability to take initiative, seek out problems to solve and communicate technical concepts in terms that less technical individuals can understand
  • Demonstrates thorough attention to detail and willingness to learn,  practices rechecking personal work and seeking second opinions as required
  • Adept at working in a cross-functional, matrix environment that is highly collaborative
  • Demonstrate confidence when speaking; can engage in technical discussions with an open mind and can be persuasive and influential when needed
