About HOT

Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) sits at the nexus of participatory mapping, community-led development, humanitarian response, open data and tech. With a talented and diverse team spread around the globe, HOT is an NGO that supports a dynamic global community of thousands of dedicated volunteers using maps and open data for humanitarian response and the Sustainable Development Goals. Working with humanitarian and development partners like the Red Cross, Médecins Sans Frontières, UN agencies, governments and others, the HOT community maps in solidarity with those affected by or at risk of disaster, contributing the maps and data aid workers need to do their lifesaving work.

In 2020 the work of the HOT community was recognized by TED’s Audacious Project, a collaborative philanthropic initiative that serves as a springboard for social impact on a grand scale, leading to an exciting new phase of growth. HOT is expanding its activities: opening four regional hubs and scaling up its support to local mapping communities with the audacious goal of mapping an area home to one billion people in 94 countries at high risk of disasters or experiencing poverty - mapping with communities before they are in crisis.

About the Open Mapping Hub-Eastern & Southern Africa (ESA-Hub)

The goal of the hub is to foster social innovation and entrepreneurship within the OpenStreetMap Ecosystem in the region in order to improve the lives of communities in a real and significant way;  create diverse, vibrant and sustainable Open Mapping Communities and organizations in the region; ensure human capacity development on OpenStreetMap Skills in the region and enhance collaboration between OpenStreetMap Contributors and data users across government, humanitarian and development agencies in the region. We work in 23 countries across the Eastern & Southern Africa region

About the Role

The Open Mapping Hub - Eastern & Southern Africa is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Community Engagement Associate who shall forge new and maintain existing relationships with subject matter experts, open data thought leaders, other organizations and the HOT community.

This position will work closely with program, data quality and fundraising teams to achieve objectives in alignment with HOT’s current strategic plan. The Community Engagement Associate will have strong experience in organising and delivering community grants and events, creating effective community communication strategies, tracking and evaluating network growth results, public speaking/engagement, and working with and engaging diverse audiences.

If you are experienced in community engagement and network building, a natural communicator and excited to create quality connections between the ESA-Hub and the public, this is the perfect position for you.

Responsibilities

  • Evolving and maintaining a Vibrant Community Strategy - including building the Open Mapping Brand Identity in Eastern & Southern Africa, Onboarding mappers and contributors both offline and online, Ability to think in relation to multiple persons, individuals and organisations working with and inpartnership with HOT in the region, Creating a content roadmap for knowledge sharing, offline and online events and other engagement activities.
  • Analytics, Reporting and Evaluation - including tracking of progress and results, the ability to set clear goals and using daily, monthly and quarterly data and insights to support programming. Analyse & summarise data for presentation to internal and external hub partners
  • Project Management - End to End Management and execution for community programs and events
  • Maintains ongoing communications with participants of our community granting efforts to ensure project deliverables are met, to track progress and to provide support on project management and implementation.
  • Organizes and maintains a network of communities and organisations participating in HOT’s work in the region, including facilitating virtual discussions and planning and facilitating peer -peer learning events
  • Contribute to the Hubs learning agenda by supporting the production of high quality communication and engagement materials which capture lessons and insights from hub programs

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years experience in community building and engagement
  • Professional experience working with organisations in the private sector and/or community-based organizations
  • Autonomous but highly collaborative
  • Savvy with technology, with proficiency in project management implementation approaches and technologies, use of social media platform, proficiency with Google workspace, software related to data collection at and after events and organizational record storage and improvement (e.g. Salesforce)
  • Very strong communication, interpersonal, and facilitation skills; ability to express complex ideas in simple comprehensible language
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills in English. Ability to write articles, blog posts, concept notes and reports with minimal review and supervision
  • Highly organized and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • French competency is an added advantage
