ABOUT THE POSITION
I-64 Operations Leader | Richmond, Virginia Beach or Williamsburg, VA
VHB is seeking a driven I-64 Operations Leader for our I-64 Corridor offices (Richmond, Williamsburg, and Virginia Beach) to join our leadership team. This position is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations and setting goals across the corridor. One of the primary responsibilities of the Business Operations Leader is to manage all financial aspects of the business to make sure it is running soundly and ensuring all business functions are in-line with our strategic goals. This leadership role will involve formulating strategy, improving performance, procuring resources, securing, and maintaining contracts, implementing operational policies and procedures, monitoring KPIs, and making important strategic decisions.
The Operational Leader is also responsible for fostering a positive, collaborative environment and will strive to advance VHB’s Generational Company philosophy, core values brand and strategic vision. A focus of this Leader is to strengthen our OneVHB culture by building regional prominence through continuous growth and financial success, and by developing a team that provides a cross-section of independently strong integrated thinkers. The successful candidate will have excellent leadership skills, people skills, knowledge of active listening, and will always look for ways to engage employees and make the workplace more effective and efficient.
As a key part of the leadership team, the Operational Manager will work hand in hand with our Growth and Market Leaders in the corridor, in the region, and across the entire VHB footprint. Jointly you will solidify strong relations, conduct strategic planning, identify project pursuits, manage client relationships, promote projects, and build relationships by connecting with other people. Together the Operations Leader and Growth Leaders will promote a company culture that encourages top performance and high morale.
Responsibilities
- Manages an operation (comprised of three offices) of 125+ people; carries out supervisory responsibilities for office leadership, including planning, assigning, and directing work; evaluating performance, coaching and mentoring; resolving staffing issues
- Drives and manages operational and financial performance; monitors, assesses and reports project metrics and results
- Conducts senior management, office leadership, and office-wide staff meetings regarding general office management issues/happenings, the vision, and overall performance and future direction of the office
- Develops, monitors, and is accountable or the office budget, ensuring that operations are managed within established guidelines; develops cost saving measures as appropriate
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of the markets that VHB services and actively promote the concept of integrated thinking within the organization
- Demonstrates a functional knowledge of each key service line in your office, and build opportunities within and outside those markets to promote VHB's integrated service model
- Demonstrates business acumen through a thorough understanding and analysis of financial reports and other business tracking systems:
- Use the information to make improvements
- Drive effective decisions and set priorities
- Manage critical drivers of office profitability
- Ensures that QA/QC processes are in place and implemented on all projects
- Collaborates regularly with the Regional Manager to update on performance
- Collaborates regularly with Corridor Growth Leader(s) to ensure strategic alignment
- Leads Project Review meetings to manage financial expectations, support client relations, and discuss project creation opportunities; holds Project Managers accountable for follow up on action items, delivering projects “as sold,” and following VHB best business practices
- Synthesizes complex financial information into easy-to-understand communication for leadership team and staff
- Provides quarterly summary reports with documented understanding of trends and financial results working with the Regional Finance Manager and Regional Manager in preparation of the Region’s quarterly review meetings.
- Establishes the office’s annual business plan and oversee the achievement of business and financial goals
- Leads and partner with office leadership team to establish and achieve the financial and business initiatives for the office
- Conducts office leadership meetings and office-wide staff meetings
- Oversees relationships with key clients as it relates to performance and project delivery
- Serves as a VHB ambassador, promoting VHB’s success and seeking innovative ways to lead industry
Skills & Abilities
- Demonstrated track record in managing a growing office
- Proven ability to oversee a team of industry professionals
- Ability to think and act strategically in developing business practices and approaches
- Exceptional teamwork and collaboration skills, including ability to mentor staff and successfully managing complex, multi-disciplinary projects
- Highly motivated self-starter
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to motivate and inspire staff to be their best in aspects of technical work and project management
Qualifications
- 15+ years of relevant management experience in a multi-disciplinary firm
- BS in operations or business management, civil engineering, transportation planning, environmental services or a related field; master’s degree is preferred
- Prior experience in management or leadership position
- Knowledgeable in a broad range of engineering, transportation, planning and environmental topics, spanning both the public and private sectors
- Ability to travel up to 65% within the Richmond, Williamsburg, and Virginia Beach corridor
