CEIS Overview

The Cape Eleuthera Island School (CEIS), a not-for-profit organization based in Eleuthera, The Bahamas, was founded in 1999 to create and support transformational educational experiences with the mission of leadership effecting change.  The diverse CEIS educational initiatives, including the Island School Semester and Summer Term, Deep Creek Middle School, the Elementary Learning Center, and Community Engagement and Partnership, deliver unique education in partnership with the authentic and meaningful work our organization undertakes in research, sustainable development and innovation at the Cape Eleuthera Institute.

Our School

Deep Creek Middle School is an independent day school on the island of Eleuthera in The Bahamas. It was founded in September 2001 with the goal of increasing access to educational resources for people in South Eleuthera. The school has grown to serve students in grades 7, 8 and 9 and offers an experiential approach to the Bahamian national curriculum. While DCMS is located in the settlement of Deep Creek, it is fully a part of the larger Island School community and the middle school students purposefully engage in collaborative work and learning with students, faculty, scientists, farmers and innovators throughout the Island School organization.

Within the framework of CEIS’s vision of leadership effecting change, DCMS creates a learning environment where students not only learn the subject matter from the Bahamian national curriculum, but focus on academic growth, leadership and responsible citizenship. Our distinctive philosophy of education invites students to join our community, take calculated risks, solve real problems, engage with the natural environment, and experience deep learning beyond the classroom.

Job Summary

Deep Creek Middle School teachers work collaboratively with a dedicated group of colleagues and students in a flexible, team-oriented environment. In your job, you must be energized to try new things and stretch beyond a traditional job description. Our faculty design experiential, place-based curriculum, create collaborative partnerships across the Island School and within the Deep Creek community, and actively engage families to support student learning. Teachers also lead community engagement clubs, as well as after school tutoring and sports. School is open five days a week from 7:30-4:30.

This is a contractual position between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024 with the potential for extension depending on circumstances and needs of the school. Required hours may vary depending on the teaching position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities for Teaching (Health & Wellness)

• Develop, refine and implement curricula in PE, Health, and Health Science for Grades 7, 8 and 9 according to school-wide objectives and priorities

• Design and run the PE activities - including swimming, sailing, SCUBA lessons and expand to include other activities as appropriate

• Manage extracurricular activities and network to include local and regional activities, with an emphasis on community engagement (semester/Early Learning programs, etc)

• Work with a faculty team to design thematic project-based and cross curricular and cross grade projects, manage unit and lesson plans and facilitate a culminating Presentation of Learning for Schools Without Walls

• Lead a student Advisory group and co-lead a Community Engagement Club

• Communicate with students and their families on a regular basis

• Develop and implement community outreach club activities that include leadership opportunities for students

• Fulfill collaborative duties such as homeroom, recess, lunch, quiet reading, and after school tutoring

• Participate in events outside the school day, including but not limited to family/parent conferences, family information meetings, organization-wide events, student initiatives, fundraisers, etc

• Safely transport students in CEIS vans, as needed

• Participate in faculty meetings twice per week

• Engage in ongoing professional development at school and in the summer to further your professional growth and the objectives of the school

Essential Duties and Responsibilities for Student Travel and Summer Camp Program Facilitator

• Coordinate with admin team, teaching staff and the Community Engagement team to plan logistics of off-island trips, summer camp program and other student travel opportunities

• Develop network of contacts for excursions - keep records for future use Summer Camp Programs:

• Coordinate with admin team to communicate summer camp program details to families

• Contact summer school providers and facilitate student selection and placement

• Plan and facilitate logistics for students and design handover details for those covering the summer months logistics

Skills and Qualifications

• Teaching credential and/or Masters Degree

• Two or more years of experience teaching upper elementary and/or secondary students at an established educational institution

• A love of children and the outdoors

• Interest in implementing experiential project-based learning pedagogy

• Interest in exploring concepts through real world applications

• Excellent computer skills especially Google-suite use

• Excellent communication, social, and problem-solving skills

• The ability to live and work in a remote location within a small community

• A willingness to go above and beyond typical teaching expectations

• A proven record of reliably fulfilling professional responsibilities

• A high degree of flexibility and adaptability

• Wilderness First Responder, SCUBA, CPR, WAFA or Lifeguard certifications preferred

• A valid driving license is required for this position
