Health and Safety Manager

Job Summary:

The Health and Safety (H&S) Manager will report to the Director, Health and Safety. This role will have a dual focus, providing H&S oversight and technical guidance for the safe engineering and construction of Li-Cycle’s North American Commercial Hub. In parallel, this role will also provide H&S leadership in preparing and executing the key H&S programs and systems needed to ensure Hub operational readiness through commissioning and production ramp. The H&S Manager will then ultimately transition to provide professional support and leadership for ongoing Hub production operations.

Through this unique Commercial Hub, Li-Cycle is helping to build a sustainable and domestic supply chain for battery materials in the United States. What’s more, the Hub will act as a significant new source of battery materials in North America, including battery-grade lithium carbonate, nickel sulphate, and cobalt sulphate. The Hub is a tremendous undertaking, that once completed will comprise:

  • 13 new buildings that cover approximately 300,000 square feet
  • 176 total tanks; 23 of which are field fabricated
  • 31,000 cubic yards of concrete
  • 2,600 tons of steel
  • 50 miles of piping
  • 115 miles of electrical conduit; 400 miles of wiring and cable
  • An estimated 1.8 million manhours for construction

Roles & Responsibilities (Hub Design & Construction):

  • Serves as the primary Li-Cycle H&S representative for the Hub project; manages contracted Owner’s Representative providing construction safety oversight for the Hub construction.
  • Primary liaison to general contractor’s HSE team; maintaining a productive relationship with general contractor’s HSE and construction staff.
  • Leads collaborative meetings with general contractor and sub-contractors; effectively managing communications; identifying and mitigating conditions that have the potential to create harm to the environment and community.
  • Collects, monitors and reports contractor safety data, hours worked and safety statistics to

Li-Cycle project and senior management teams.

  • Provides technical guidance for project design engineering and construction; participating in key project meetings and reviews (e.g. Design Reviews, Safety Reviews, Project Reviews and Risk Management sessions), as required.

Roles & Responsibilities (Hub Operational Readiness):

  • Develop and implement key programs, practices and systems across a wide range of health and safety (H&S) disciplines to achieve compliance with HSE standards and with federal and state regulatory requirements.
  • Provides guidance, regulatory interpretation, and assistance with the Hub project and operational procedure development such as Emergency Response Plans, H&S Management Plans, Training and Induction Programs, and Operational Safety Procedures.
  • Ensures applicable laws, regulations, and H&S requirements are communicated to Hub engineering and operational teams.
  • Builds and implements systems to ensure all H&S incidents are addressed effectively; including prompt reporting, investigation, and corrective actions.
  • Participates in recommending improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment, to minimize the hazardous potential.
  • Ensures H&S excellence through training, integration of Li-Cycle’s Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) management systems into Hub operations, gathering and trending leading and trailing indicators, and participation in the incident investigation and reporting process.
  • Builds trust and relationships with operational leadership and other HSE practitioners throughout the organization.

Qualifications:

  • A degree or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, related field, or extensive industry experience in a HSE role (minimum 8+ years)
  • Professional certification(s) in health, safety and/or environmental disciplines highly desired (e.g. ASP/CSP, CIH, CHMM)
  • Functional expert in most health and safety disciplines; working knowledge of relevant federal and state standards with regard to chemical process operations preferred
  • Knowledge of federal and state standards with regard to industrial construction desired
  • A valid driver’s license and good driving record is necessary for this role.
  • Working knowledge of workers’ compensation processes and return to work practices
  • Computer proficiency with the Office 365 suite of services
  • Preference for experience with documentation development, program development and ISO management systems (e.g. ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001)

Work Conditions:

  • Limited travel may be required (including cross-border travel with Canada)
  • Ability to be on-site and physically oversee the construction of an industrial facility
  • May be exposed to hazards associated with manufacturing
  • Use of PPE will be required
  • May require alternate work schedule to support operations (weekends/nights)
