Head of IP

After securing our Series A in 2021, Meatable has transformed from a research-focused company to a full-fledged food company. We have attracted senior talent across functions and have made major steps in the development of our cultivated meat products. Currently we are preparing for our first launch.

Meatable’s cutting-edge technology is based a proprietary technique called Opti-OX. As we continue developing further, we see many opportunities to generate additional IP based on our current and future technological developments.

We are looking for a seasoned Head of IP to further optimize our IP position.

This person will be end-responsible for shaping as well as executing our IP strategy. This includes regular assessment of and improving FTO, monitoring external IP, and spotting opportunities for patents based on developments in our research, development, and food application departments. Our Head of IP will be supported by management, external law firms, and our IP advisor with >25 years of experience as Global Vice President of IP for a multinational company. At Meatable we believe in flexible working conditions which are up for discussion dependent on the candidate’s preference. Full-time on site is possible, but part-time and hybrid models are also well established in the company.

Meatable is an impact-driven company, and looking for a candidate who intrinsically believes in our mission to satisfy the world’s appetite for meat without harming people, animals, or the planet. Our ideal candidate has the ability and expertise to support our teams in being more successful in the market with IP. This person has in-and-out understanding of monitoring and generating global patents (and other IP rights), and can work together with our teams and patent attorneys to ensure the right opportunities are spotted and acted upon. She/he likes working with multiple teams (researchers, process engineers, food application, analytics, commerce etc) with a wide range of IP knowledge, and enjoys training and supporting them where needed. For that we want  to establish and implement world-class IP procedures.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Make Meatable even more successful with IP – faster to market while being better on the planet
• Spot opportunities for new IP together with our research, development, process, food-application, and commercial teams
• Update the IP strategy where necessary
• Install world-class IP procedure and support and train the organization
• Continuously monitor external IP developments and spot opportunities an risks
• Monitor FTO, assess risks and together with Meatable’s management team mitigate them.
• File new IP supported by our external patent lawyers
• Partner effectively with relevant stakeholders to provide clear, strategic business enabling IP advice and strategy

Education, Skills and Experience

• S. or Ph.D. in molecular biology, cell biology, biotechnology, or other area relevant to biopharmaceutical IP practice with a focus in antibody and cell therapy technologies
• Qualification as European and/or relevant national patent attorney with at least at least 5 years of biotechnology patent experience at a law firm or in-house IP department
• Experience in building and leveraging global IP portfolios at all stages of prosecution and enforcement
• Experience in designing and executing freedom to operate analyses across different technologies and different jurisdictions, developing, and communicating actionable risk mitigation strategies
• Experience in IP transactions, IP due diligence and in adverse IP proceedings (oppositions, invalidity, litigation, …) would be beneficial
