We are looking for a proven leader to join our team as the Head of Chemical Regulation. In this role, you will have the chance to expand our consultancy offerings, seize new market opportunities, and foster cross-Ricardo collaboration.

To succeed in this role, you must possess a track record of excellence in chemical regulatory consultancy. Your expertise as a communicator will enable you to convey complex information with ease. You will also possess a deep understanding of the commercial landscape, recognising both the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Collaboration will be second nature to you, as you engage effectively with both internal and external stakeholders. Additionally, your strong skills in customer project and relationship management will set you apart from the rest.

Ideally, you will also bring a strong technical grounding in niche areas such as supply regulations, REACH, biocides, Agrochems, and more. This specialised knowledge will enhance your ability to deliver comprehensive and tailored solutions to our clients.

This role is a hybrid position as the candidate would be expected to commute to one of UK offices (if based in the UK) or Madrid office (if based in Madrid).

We encourage you to apply for this role if you have the following competencies and experience:

  • Experienced in leading the development and implementation of a business strategy with respect to chemical regulatory consultancy.
  • Providing extensive knowledge (and existing relationships) in the UK, European or global chemical regulatory landscape, in particular REACH, CLP / GHS (including technical detail around SDS authoring, PC notification, etc.) and emerging government policy (e.g. the CSS). Global expertise would be desirable.
  • Have an extensive technical background in supply and transport regulations; including experience in safety data sheet authoring (understanding how to classify both substances and mixtures and author a fully compliant safety data sheet), expert knowledge of REACH and knowledge of Poison centres (annex VIII requirements) strongly desirable to support the team delivery.
  • A skilled influencer and leader who enables the team to successfully deliver regulatory consultancy projects and supports personal development of team.
  • Performing and managing high quality technical consultancy in the field of chemical regulatory affairs and an effective delegator of work.
  • Be an excellent communicator and used to presenting your ideas and project outputs to customers and at regulatory conferences, at events or through webinars, blogs etc.
  • Bring your own network of contacts from customers and stakeholder organisations.

As the Head of Chemical Regulation your main responsibilities would be:

  • Provide guidance and strategic direction to the team to ensure a high quality and customer focused delivery for the Business Area and that this meets agreed targets for Revenue, Orders and Profit. Leading and growing the current team of 20 people.
  • Overseeing the undertaking of a range of client work, including contribution with your own specialisms as needed.
  • Using extensive technical knowledge (in areas such as REACH, CLP, and associated regulations, to both industry and governmental customers) to contribute to delivery at the project director level (for key clients) and be the technical sales leader across the business area.
  • Identifying growth opportunities, new consultancy and product offerings, and potential industry challenges based on market conditions, legislative change and customer demands. Driving the future development of the function and the chemical risk teams as a whole
  • Working closely with the Ricardo leadership team to achieve the growth plans and Chemical Risk Strategy.
  • Leading the Chemical Regulatory Consultancy team and team leaders, driving the growth and the development of the team. Focusing on our meta themes (clarity, genuine concern, playing people in position and praise) alongside Ricardo’s values (be mindful, create together, aim high and be innovative)
  • Providing leadership of project staff related to customers / consultants working on technical projects as Project Director (managing the quality, accuracy and timeliness of deliverables)
  • Liaising with marketing and sales staff to ensure effective promotion of Ricardo’s capabilities in support of sales activities to grow these areas and designing effective marketing strategy with the Sales Director
  • Supporting client relationship and the account management team by joining key customer discussions and identifying new areas of opportunity with the client
  • Collaborating and identifying strategic opportunities and new products and services with other Ricardo business area including in our chemicals policy team, agriculture and water businesses on a global basis
  • Keep up to date with market trends and developments and provide technical support to colleagues in the development of new service offerings and creation of technical papers
