Head, Corporate Finance

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Director-Finance & Administration (DFA), the Head-Corporate Finance provides leadership and support to finance related functions necessary to provide accurate and timely financial reporting. A strong internal control environment is maintained by guiding the development and implementation of efficient and effective processes, policies, systems, and tools throughout the organization. With the support of the financial accounting team, this position ensures the ongoing maintenance of Cuso International’s accounting financial system, through the completion of monthly, and annual period end close procedures, and delivers timely and accurate financial information across the organization. The responsibility for cash flow and investment management and the accounts payable and payment process rests with this position. The DFA is also responsible for the coordination and consolidation of all department budgets and regulatory compliance with the external auditors and completion of the annual tax returns to IRS and CRA.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsibility for the accounts payable and payment process and be a signatory for financial overview of payments

  • Signatory to the bank account and investment accounts of Cuso

  • Preparation of cash flow schedules to ensure that funds are available as required.

  • Ensure that adequate insurance exists and current for all Cuso assets.

  • Ensure financial policies and procedures are updated regularly

  • Ensure the financial policies and processes are adhered to across the organization.

  • Ensure financial and management risks are monitored, identified, and processes implemented to mitigate any risks identified

  • Conduct reviews and provide support on financial matters to the Senior Management Team and other managers

  • Ensure timely financial month-end closure

  • Review of all financial reports before distribution to internal and external stakeholders

  • Preparation of monthly variance analysis of the financial statements for the DFA

  • Review and analyze the monthly balance sheet reconciliations and advise the DFA on material balances and changes. Sign off on reconciliations and schedules and set a timeline for adjusting outstanding items.

  • Monthly monitoring and reporting of the deferred revenue balances both for restricted donations and donor funded programs to the DFA

  • Generate, distribute, and develop any ad hoc financial reports requested by stakeholders

  • Develop the Finance department budget for review with DFA

  • Responsible for the yearly organizational budget

  • Be the lead staff responsible for coordinating the annual organizational and compliance audits

  • Ensure compliance with organizational decisions, policies, and procedures within the area of responsibility

  • Tracking of the company’s fixed assets

General: The Head, Corporate Finance is expected to work effectively as part of the finance team and to:

  • Act as a back-up to the DFA, as needed
  • Ensure all support services are running effectively and efficiently
  • Lead and assist in the recruitment and training of new finance team members.
  • Ensure succession plan through cross-training of finance team members
  • Undertake specific additional responsibilities

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Recognized professional accounting designation (CPA; CA)

  • University degree preferably in finance-related field

  • Minimum 7 years progressive experience in a relevant financial/accounting role

  • Financial statement preparation preferably in a not-for-profit organization

  • Experience with annual external audits

  • Client-focused approach with experience in a multi-cultural environment

  • Integrity, honesty, and a strong commitment to excellence and continuous improvement

  • Identify and frame situations and opportunities, and make appropriate decisions with minimal oversight

  • Strong written and verbal (English and French) communication skills

  • Experience in successfully leading a team

  • Ability to work in a changing and fast-paced environment

  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally, and occasionally work irregular hours, as needed

Desirable

  • Knowledge of Cuso International goals and approach to development work
  • the Experience working with a variety of other funder agreements (UNHCR, WFP, EU, etc.)
  • Experience working in a charitable organization
  • Experience filing T3010 charity tax return
  • Experience filing 990 USA tax returns
  • Experience working with Infor SunSytems accounting software
