Program/Department Overview
EDF Action, the advocacy partner of the Environmental Defense Fund, builds transformative political power to help protect our environment and the health of American families. We work with a broad range of allies all across the country to combat climate change, reduce pollution and promote sustainable prosperity. This means educating legislators about new innovative solutions, working across the aisle to build political momentum, mobilizing constituents to advocate for our health and environment, and working to elect pro-environment candidates while holding anti-environment politicians accountable. In addition, we are working to foster the next generation of climate leaders.
Overall Function
The Grassroots Communications Intern will help the local EDF Action organizer with on-the-ground communications support for our climate advocacy efforts. The intern will report to the Senior Communications Manager/National Press Secretary for EDF Action, and work as part of the Political Affairs communications team, helping to achieve EDF Action’s grassroots goals.
Key Responsibilities
Tasks will include but are not limited to:
Help the organizer execute event logistics for in-person events.
Collect photos and video footage from events.
Collect photos and B-roll of EDF Action members and organizers in action at community events, volunteer activities, and petitioning drives.
Identify member stories and conduct video interviews.
Write social copy & create video/graphic content from the field for TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Threads.
Write blogs around EDF Action’s grassroots organizing program.
Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values
Qualifications
Must be enrolled in/be a recent graduate of an undergraduate degree program with coursework in journalism, marketing, communications, environmental policy, and/or political science.
Demonstrated interest in social media with knowledge of TikTok and Instagram as a focus.
Interest in politics and event planning.
Proficient writer and proof-reader.
Basic graphic and video editing experience.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Must be well organized, motivated, and detail oriented.
Ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.
Ability to work in a team setting and have the ability to work independently when projects are due.
Demonstrate self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
Demonstrate initiative and problem-solving skills.
Location
U.S. Remote in Detroit, MI with in-person events and meetings with EDF Action Field Organizer.
Term
Fall 2023 with opportunity to extend to Spring 2024.
Hours
Part-time (15-20 hr/week)
Compensation
This internship would involve compensation for work paid at a rate competitive with leading non-profits at $17/hr.
