About the Oversight Board

The Oversight Board makes binding and independent decisions about the most challenging content issues on Facebook and Instagram. Members of the Board include Helle Thorning-Schmidt, former Prime Minister of Denmark, Tawakkol Karman, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Michael McConnell, Director of Stanford’s Constitutional Law Center, and many other diverse leaders and thinkers from around the world. The Board issued its first decisions in January 2021.

The Oversight Board Administration is the team of full-time staff who support Board Members in carrying out their duties. The Administration has a presence in London, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., and operates with a global scope.

The role

Joining the Oversight Board Administration is a chance to be part of an organization which is leading on some of the most prominent and challenging issues facing the tech industry and society.

The Global Engagement Officer will play a crucial role in engaging with diverse global stakeholder groups, online communities and media to proactively communicate ongoing Oversight Board activity and policy positions, and to address emerging trends and challenges outside the United States as they arise. They will bring a strong understanding of the complexities of human rights and freedom of expression and will be adept at communicating complex policy positions and the outcomes of specific content-related cases to varied global audiences.

This is a 8-month fixed term position and the role reports to the Public Policy Manager for the Oversight Board.

Key responsibilities

Responsibilities for this role will include, but are not limited to:

  • Identify and map key external stakeholder groups and audiences on an ongoing basis.
  • Develop and deliver a global engagement strategy to meet evolving stakeholder needs.
  • Drive delivery of media relations activities, including reactive and proactive press.
  • Proactively engage key stakeholders and media to:
  • Explain the Oversight Board structure, functions and purpose,
  • Reiterate Oversight Board case decisions to stakeholder groups.
  • Brief internal stakeholders on trends and considerations observed in external stakeholder discussions.

This role may be based in the Administration’s location of Washington, DC.

Skills & Experience

  • Degree educated or equivalent.
  • Strong experience and expertise in stakeholder engagement and communications, for example within a public affairs or public relations role.
  • Knowledge and understanding of international approaches policy setting, international and regional human rights and mechanisms and of recent developments at the international level on content moderation.
  • Experience working and engaging with media, policymakers, civil society and non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience of working with multiple countries and/or diverse multinational workplaces.
  • Knowledge of multiple languages preferable, French or Spanish would be an advantage.
  • Experience coordinating a range of external stakeholder activities including high-level meetings, events, workshops and other multi-stakeholder forums.
