About the Position
GIS Analyst | Raleigh, NC
Under close supervision receives specific assignments to conduct standard analyses of spatial data for users. Produces maps expressing the results of analytical processes using desktop software. Coordinates the procurement and distribution of spatial data. Participates in the design and implementation of spatial databases in the system and assisting programming staff understand spatial data processes while creating and maintaining end user applications.
Responsibilities
- Performs standard analysis of spatial data using GIS technology (e.g., buffering, spatial overlays, distance calculations).
- Researches and corrects problems with data using spatial and logical analyses.
- Performs data searches and retrievals.
- Extracts and organizes data.
- Research source documents to resolve missing or conflicting data.
- Converts GIS data to CAD software format.
- Uses coordinate geometry to convert surveying data to GIS format.
- Manages basic GIS projects or components of more complex GIS projects.
- Creates and manages online tools using spatial data.
- Serves as a database administrator for spatial data.
- May review work products of other technical staff.
- Participates in professional and personal development aligned with career goals.
- Performs all job functions in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and VHB policies and procedures.
Skills and Attributes
- Theoretical knowledge of the principles of geographic information science and GIS technology.
- Beginner skill in the use of GIS software, particularly ArcGIS in its desktop and online forms.
- Ability to develop and maintain online spatial data tools for non-GIS users.
- Fundamental skill in applying GIS technology to solve analytical problems.
- Fundamental knowledge of relational database management systems and the ability to use the SQL language.
- Knowledge of the fundamentals of Global Positioning System and skill in the use of GPS technology for data collection.
- Ability to understand and employ LiDAR data.
- Ability to utilize data transformation software as a means of importing and exporting data for use by the engineering department.
- Ability to express meaning through cartography.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Team oriented with ability to perform multiple tasks independently in a timely manner and collaborate effectively and positively with coworkers.
- Self-motivated, highly organized, and detail oriented.
- Skills and knowledge must be commensurate with required experience and job level.
Qualifications
- 0-2 years of experience in the use of GIS technology
- BS in Geography, Engineering, Planning, or GIS (a master’s degree can be substituted for 2 years of experience)
- GIS certification preferred
Work Environment
Requires ability to work in a busy office environment with significant computer use.
