PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Mercy Corps is a leading global organization powered by the belief that a better world is possible. In disaster, in hardship, in more than 40 countries around the world, we partner to put bold solutions into action — helping people triumph over adversity and build stronger communities from within.

Mercy Corps’ Technical Support Unit (TSU) is a key part of the Program Department. TSU subject-matter experts help set agency strategy and provide consultation – from assessment and design through project implementation and results measurement – to field offices worldwide, in some of the world’s toughest places. TSU team members lead research, foster organizational learning, represent Mercy Corps to external audiences, and develop partnerships. The TSU is also integral to global business development and revenue.

The Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) intern will support the Gender and Youth Capacity Building, Learning and Small Grants Associate Award (AA) under Implementer Led Design, Evidence, Analysis, and Learning (IDEAL) program. The Gender and Youth Activity (GAYA*) Associate Award works to improve the quality and impact of emergency and non-emergency food security and resilience activities by addressing the barriers and challenges implementing partners face when integrating gender and youth within their work.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Understanding and experience with the foundational requirements of any MEL-focused position, such as:

  • Development and use of data collection tools (light-touch surveys, focus group discussion and key informant interview protocols), both in word and in Ona.

  • Development and populating of indicator and stakeholder engagement tracking databases and accompanying standard operating procedures.

  • Consolidation and reporting on key program indicators.

  • Deep understanding of the process and skills associated with analyzing data from and preparing the output for a stakeholder consultation - a method developed by the IDEAL Associate Award under which GAYA operates. This will include an understanding of GAYA’s learning agenda, and the use of this method to answer GAYA’s key learning questions.

DELIVERABLES:

  • Support the Technical Officer for Research and Learning to analyze data from, and develop the output summarizing the learning from GAYA’s upcoming stakeholder consultation.
  • Support the Technical Officer for Research and Learning to develop database management standard operating procedures (SOPs). Regularly update participant tracking databases based on those SOPs, as needed.
  • Support the GAYA Program Officer to update GAYA’s Indicator Performance Tracking Table metrics in TolaData, Mercy Corps’ web-based indicator management, and tracking platform.
  • Support the GAYA Advisor for Knowledge Management and Communications in producing up to three event summary reports, based on metrics identified from webinar participation and registration data.
  • Support the Technical Officer for Research and Learning to revise GAYA’s Stakeholder Tracking system. Regularly update Stakeholder Tracking database based on revised SOPs, as needed.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • University or Master’s degree in progress or recently completed (within 1 year) in relevant discipline
  • Experience with collecting data, managing databases, and/or conducting primary qualitative research, either as part of coursework or through prior internship/volunteer experience.
  • Experience with incorporating and mainstreaming gender and youth for international development or humanitarian projects, preferred but not required.

Mercy Corps interns represent the agency both during and outside of work hours and are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and Mercy Corps policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
