Essential Services Director
JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Sacred Heart Community Service, located in San Jose, CA is looking for a multifaceted Program Director to lead, develop, innovate, and integrate basic needs programs to help stabilize individuals and families facing economic hardship while creating opportunities for our members to get involved to change the conditions in their lives. SHCS seeks strong leadership to partner with internal programs, cultivate external collaborations and funding entities, while developing member engagement in programs and systems change work. This individual must be highly organized, and possess strong communications skills, a strong track record of program management, and an ability to work flexibly and creatively. The ideal candidate must be equally committed to our vision of a community united to ensure every child and adult is free from poverty, an approach of driving policy change through transformational leadership development, and teaching and living an anti-racism and anti-oppression worldview. For 58 years, SHCS has been one of the leading institutions addressing poverty in Santa Clara County through a strategy that combines addressing the consequences of poverty through impactful programs while building power with people to push for systemic change.
Position Summary
The Director of Essential Services provides leadership in SHCS’ efforts to develop, manage, evaluate and improve Sacred Heart’s essential service portfolio: Welcome Center, Food Pantry, Clothes Closet, and Donation Station. These programs enroll low-income people into membership, provide basic needs, and engage and connect members to community resources, self-sufficiency programs, and opportunities to get involved. The position leads the coordination and alignment of internal programs and spearheads community initiatives and collaborations with other service providers. The position directly supervises two program managers, while providing training and support to staff, volunteers, and members in a diverse program area. The Director recruits and develops member participation in advisory committee(s). The Director plays a leadership role in organization-wide events and campaigns, serves on the senior management team of SHCS, and acts as a liaison with funding entities.
Management (60-70%)
● Provides structure, support, supervision, training, evaluation and professional development for the management team and staff of SHCS’ Essential Services Program Division: Food Pantry, Clothes Closet, Donation Station, and Welcome Center.
● Ensures the alignment of programs with strategic plan including the compassionate provision of basic needs and connection to community engagement and organizing efforts.
● Oversees integration with financial and utility assistance programs, connection to self-sufficiency programs, and relationships with external partners.
● Oversees the recruitment and hiring of program staff and interns.
● Leads the recruitment, development, training and support for program advisory committee(s).
● Spearheads training and professional development of staff in alignment with SHCS’ operating values.
● Oversees the development, reporting, and analysis of program goals, outcomes, and team performance metrics in alignment with SHCS Strategic Plan.
● Directs the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of program policies and procedures including systems, protocols, standards, and training.
● Supports the direct implementation of programs and services as needed.
● Coordinates the development and implementation of emergency response protocols, training, and support.
● Ensures program teams are trained and equipped to engage in crisis intervention with members as needed.
● Supervises the recruitment, scheduling, training, supervision, and recognition of volunteers in coordination with program staff and Community Engagement Team.
● Ensures a safe working environment through regular training, updates, and equipment maintenance.
● Oversees and supports staff in outreach, training and development, supervision, and surveying of program volunteers and interns.
Administrative (10-15%)
● Leads efforts to identify prospective program funders, and provides support for the development of proposals and solicitations to government, foundation, and corporate funding sources.
● Ensures contract negotiation, grant administration, compliance, and reporting.
● Supports the development and presentation of data, performance narratives, case studies, and reports to funders and institutional stakeholders on program efforts and impact.
● Oversees the tracking of in-kind contributions in coordination with Finance and Community Development Teams.
● Leads the development, tracking, and management of program budgets.
Collaboration (5-10%)
● Spearheads SHCS’ efforts to develop, support, and integrate regional community collaborations designed to meet basic needs.
● Supports the design and implementation of research efforts to assess the status and needs of people living in poverty in Santa Clara County.
● Supports initiatives and campaigns to promote program, public policy, and regulatory interventions to poverty.
Leadership (10-15%)
● Provides leadership and support to organization-wide programs such as holiday food and gift distributions and Pack-a-Back programs, including planning, training, execution, and evaluation.
● Supports the planning and implementation of organization-wide programs, events, training, and outreach efforts.
● Represents SHCS in the community through outreach to schools, faith communities, businesses, and community groups.
● Attends Board of Directors meetings and Board committee meetings as assigned.
● Serves as a member of the Senior Management Team and serves as on site manager as needed.
● Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications and Experience
● Strong commitment to our vision of ensuring every child and adult is free from poverty.
● 5-7 years of experience working in human services, social work, or a safety net organization.
● 2-3 years of experience in program management.
● Demonstrated experience working with a large volume of organizational stakeholders and partners.
● Ability to work with diverse people, communities, and cultures, with understanding of culturally competent practices.
● Demonstrated experience in project management including planning, training and tracking systems.
● Knowledge of outcomes-based planning, evaluation, and program development.
● Ability to multitask, provide quick responses and be highly organized.
● Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
● Four-year degree or a minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in human services.
● Proficiency with databases (such as Salesforce), Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Google Docs.
● Ability to work long hours, evenings, and some Saturdays.
● Ability to lift up to 30lbs without assistance and up to 50lbs with assistance.
● The position requires you to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time.
● The position also requires computer use up to 6-8 hours per day.
● Must possess a valid CA drivers license and be insurable under the organization’s driving policy.
● Must successfully pass a DMV and criminal background check.
Preferred
● Bilingual/biliterate/bicultural Spanish-English strongly preferred.
● Masters in Social Work with community organization concentration.
Position is exempt, full-time and reports to the Associate Director
Compensation
The salary is commensurate with experience. Salary range is $105,000-$115,000 per year.
