We are currently looking for an Environmental Scientist / Consultant to join our busy Melbourne team and work primarily within the field of contaminated land assessment and site remediation.

You will be an early career professional, seeking more hands-on mentoring and guidance to develop your expertise rapidly. Working directly alongside the highly experienced seniors in our Environmental Science team (with 20 to 30+ years’ experience and including a former EPA-accredited environmental auditor), you will benefit from the intensive career development support that larger firms cannot always offer.

This role will also suit somebody keen to acquire more diverse skills and experience across wider environmental consulting, with the expectation that you will get the opportunity to work on complex Environmental Approvals projects, and possibly also Waste Advisory projects.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead small projects and assist on medium and large scale projects, primarily within the field of contaminated land assessment and site remediation.
  • Provide support for environmental approvals projects as required, and as associated with extractive industries, industrial facilities, waste / environmental infrastructure, and energy sectors.
  • Conduct environmental fieldwork, including health, safety and environmental management, supervision of subcontractors, collection of environmental samples, and coordination of laboratory testing.
  • Prepare reports for all stages of each project (from conception to completion) along with along with GIS data, analysis and production of high quality maps and drawings as appropriate.
  • Assist with the preparation of fee proposals and tenders, where necessary, and coordinate inputs from our other disciplines or external subconsultants.
  • Attend meetings with seniors and clients to manage projects according to Ricardo’s scope of services.
  • Provide input into business development strategies and initiatives to further grow the Ricardo business.

Key competencies and experience

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Geology, Earth Sciences or equivalent. An appreciation of other disciplines g., Ecology, Hydrogeology, Cultural Heritage would be advantageous.
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in consulting, preferably within the field of contaminated land assessment and site remediation, and prior involvement in preparing PSI, DSI and remediation planning reports.
  • Working knowledge of key national and Victorian contaminated land regulations and guidance such as NEPM (2013) and EPA publications linked to Victoria’s Environment Protection Act (2017).
  • Competency using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to produce maps and drawings would be an advantage, although in-house training can be provided to help develop your skills in this area.
  • Solid experience in preparation of Health, Safety and Environmental plans, method statements, along with a high level of competency in implementing these plans, supervising fieldworks and subcontractors.
  • Flexibility to adapt to the preparation of environmental approvals (EIA, EES, works approvals / development licences) or for environmental inputs to planning permit applications.
  • Proven track record of contributing high quality work and demonstrated experience in managing project tasks to completion, within budget and to a high standard.
  • Current driver’s licence.
