ABOUT THE POSITION
Environmental Inspector - Industrial Hygiene | Newark, NJ | Manasquan, NJ | New York, NY
VHB is seeking an Environmental Inspector for our growing Site Investigation & Remediation practice. This hire will be responsible for performing indoor environmental/indoor air quality assessments, hazardous building materials (mold, asbestos, lead, PCBs, etc.) surveys, design and oversight of remediation, managing field programs, and coordinating inspections with staff and our clients in the New Jersey and New York area. This role will be predominantly in the field.

Responsibilities
- Work under the supervision of Certified Industrial Hygienist and Project Managers
- Perform indoor environmental assessments including mold, water damage, microbial, complaint investigations, and general IAQ
- Perform assessment of hazardous building materials including asbestos, lead, PCBs, and Universal Waste
- Communicates and reports project progress and conflicts
- Liaises with clients, developers, architects, engineers, and other professionals
- Organizes work schedules and delegates tasks
- Supports the preparation of investigation and sampling plans
- Interprets data, prepares and reviews project related reports
- Supports the preparation of abatement specifications
- Manages and supports the preparation of environmental permitting and compliance documents
- Observes work in progress to ensure that procedures are followed and that materials used conform to specifications
- Providing project monitoring and air sampling, including compliance with on-site field protocols such as chain of custody forms and daily logs
- Conducts periodic and final inspections to ensure the quality of work of abatement projects
- Conducts quality assurance reviews of project deliverables
- Attends meetings with clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders in support of project
- Observes general job safety practices and may participate in the development of job safety practices and in the preparation of safety reports
Skills and Attributes
- Work in field and office settings independently and as part of a project team
- Experience with public (local, state, and Federal) and private sector clients
- Perform assessments during regular and to a lesser extent before/after-hours depending on client schedules
- Ability to problem solve and work independently
- Familiarity with good Industrial Hygiene practices including both air and materials sampling, IH sampling equipment, operation and calibration of instruments
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental regulations and standards, including EPA, OSHA, NJPEOSH, NJDOL, NJDOH, ACGIH, and NIOSH
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Pro and AutoCAD experience a plus
- Team-oriented with ability to perform multiple tasks independently in a timely manner and collaborate effectively and positively with coworkers
- Self-motivated, highly organized, and detail oriented
- The ability to lead a small field team and complete multiple projects simultaneously
Qualifications
Required
- High School diploma
- 5-8 years of fieldwork experience required (minimum of 2 years' experience in facility related indoor environmental/hazardous building materials investigations)
- Working experience with hazardous building materials, building systems (HVAC, etc.) and general construction knowledge
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Strong report writing, field coordination and task management skills
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science, industrial hygiene, or related science or engineering field
- Possess or ability to obtain within 1-2 years industry recognized certification (e.g. CIH, CIEC, CMC)
- Extensive experience in IAQ, mold, water damage, industrial hygiene, and facility-related investigations
- Experience preforming health and safety oversight (completing job hazard analysis)
- NYS DOL - Mold Assessor
- Asbestos Inspector, Management Planner, Project Monitor, Project Designer certifications
- Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor certifications
- OSHA 40 hr. HAZWOPER certification and annual refresher certifications
- OSHA 30 hr. Construction Safety Certificate
Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in New York City is $76,000-$95,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
