Status: Entry Level VISTA One year Full-time Service Opportunity, with the possibility of a second year renewal
Overview: SJLI is dedicated to improving the education, health and well-being of youth and communities of color by empowering them to enact social change through research, training and community mobilization. We privilege the ideas, voice and leadership of our youth and community members. We envision communities where education empowers individuals to use their agency for the purpose of improving each other’s lives. We educate and empower youth and community members to identify and rectify injustice. We build capacity for individuals and communities to advocate for their needs. We train and build leaders, deliver effective programs and provide neighborhoods with resources.
We empower through education, create thriving communities and change systems. Our programs have impact. More than 1,619 high school students have been served through our Urban Scholars Program; we teach 250 Healthy Living lifestyles classes annually; and average a 94% high school graduation rate among our high school seniors. Our 100 Seeds of Change Initiative built 103 community, school, neighborhood and household gardens. We increase food security by distributing thousands of pounds of free fresh produce to families and households in Inglewood. We are also working to end the school to prison pipeline.
The ideal candidate for the position being hired will have a passion for social justice, demonstrated experience in program delivery, working with middle and high school students in an educational setting, and working in a community setting with diverse populations. Some experience with tutoring or academic counseling is desirable.
Position Summary: This position is a service opportunity in association with the AmeriCorps/VISTA program with the Corporation for National and Community Service at the Social Justice Learning Institute in Houston, Texas. This position is responsible for expanding SJLI’s capacity by assisting in the delivery of the Urban Scholars program and directly supporting both on-site school instructors and students in the program. The Program and Expansion Development Associate(s) will work under the supervision of the Houston Educational Equity Programs Director. The Program and Expansion Development Associate(s) will be instrumental in ensuring program continuity, providing ongoing program development, working toward achievement of individual students’ academic outcomes, develop, maintain, and update program calendar; plan and coordinate school site and community events, college tours, and other field trips. Assist with assessing and maintaining program data; and maintaining and monitor data on program milestones and benchmarks.
Compensation: AmeriCorp/VISTA service members receive an Annual Living Allowance, paid bi-weekly. A healthcare benefit option is available. Responsibilities:
Provides essential support for Urban Scholars Houston program delivery at school sites
Develop, maintain and update an Urban Scholars Program Implementation Calendar
Supports individual students at school sites with wrap-around support including counseling, referrals to services and other activities
Provide operational and administrative support to Educational Equity Programs Director
Plans and coordinates college tours and other field trips
Assists with Urban Scholars intake application process
Communicates with on-site school site instructors regarding program area needs
Plans and coordinates school site and community events
Communicates with on-site school teachers, students, school staff and parents to ensure the effectiveness of the program
Identifies guest speakers and other special guests in support of Urban Scholars curriculum units and lesson plans
Track program outcomes by entering student data using SJLI's Apricot database system
Track individual student progress by reviewing grades and transcripts and entering data in the Apricot database
Consistently collect and organize program data into reports.
Analyze student and program data
Provide administrative support for at the assigned school sites
