About IWPR

Founded in 1991 and operating currently in three dozen countries around the world, the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) is an award-winning international media and human rights development network, with charitable status in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands.

The Role:

We are seeking a media professional with extensive connections in and around Ukraine – and internationally, where possible – to act as an Employment Facilitator and Mentor as part of IWPR’s ongoing Ukraine Voices initiative.

Ukraine Voices is an IWPR initiative focused on strengthening the capacity of Ukrainian journalists to safely, effectively and professionally report from the frontlines, increasing audiences’ access to balanced independent information. This initiative primarily includes a range of mentoring and training support to journalists and fixers most at need in Ukraine.

The Employment Facilitator and Mentor will be responsible for providing support to IWPR’s network of journalists and fixers, including identifying relevant employment opportunities for journalists, and providing mentoring and training support to journalists in how to improve their employment prospects.

This short-term contract is for an initial period of Monday 15th October - Friday 18th November 2022, for a maximum of 27 consulting days. It is understood that some prospective applicants may only be available for fewer days; all applications will be considered, although please provide specific details of your availability with your application.

In this role you will:

  • Provide linkages between Ukrainian media and freelance journalists and fixers seeking employment and job opportunities, utilising existing networks to provide job-matching opportunities;
  • Host 25+ mentoring sessions (approximately 30-60 minutes) with individual journalists and fixers, primarily online, in how to improve their employment prospects. These sessions may include mentoring support in skills such as pitching stories, preparing a CV / resume, creating an attractive portfolio of work, conducting mock interviews, and presentation skills;
  • Host two training events in-person in Lviv & / or Kyiv, in conjunction with IWPR’s Ukraine Voices Project Manager on the theme of Employment Prospects;
  • Hosting one online event for IWPR’s current contributor network (located throughout Ukraine and internationally), in conjunction with IWPR’s Ukraine Voices Project Manager on the theme of Employment Prospects;
  • Prepare guidance materials (such as written bullet-point guidelines) to share with IWPR’s network of contributors on how to improve their employment prospects.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in media and media development;
  • Extensive networks of contacts within the Ukrainian media sector;
  • Fluency in Ukrainian and English (other languages considered an asset);
  • Experience in conducting training and mentoring programmes.

Principals only. No calls please. Only those who have been considered for an interview will be contacted.

IWPR is an equal opportunities employer and positively encourages applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital status, veteran status or pregnancy and maternity. IWPR will never ask for payment for recruitment.
