About the project:
This opportunity is part of IWPR’s Voices for Change (V4C) programme, implemented in sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on Nigeria and Kenya. V4C supports independent journalists, media outlets and civil society organisations to give voice and improve accountability, encouraging positive change in response to serious human rights violations, malign influence and disinformation, and the drivers of conflict.
About the role:
IWPR is seeking freelance editors - in multiple languages - to assist with ongoing editorial support for content production and mentoring support to journalists and media outlets in sub-Saharan Africa.
As directed by the IWPR Africa Editor, editors will provide editorial inputs on the V4C project across a range of content in the areas of serious human rights violations, malign influence and disinformation, and conflict-focused reporting. This is expected to include support to both local and international publications alongside beneficiary journalists, media outlets and communications professionals, primarily based in Nigeria and Kenya.
Experienced journalists and editors with a strong track record of training and mentoring are encouraged to apply, particularly those operating in languages other than English. Applicants and CVs are particularly encouraged from those with editorial and journalistic experience operating in the French and Portuguese languages. Applications are accepted in English &/or in other operating languages of the applicant.
Applicants are particularly encouraged from individuals based in &/or those who primarily reside in sub-Saharan Africa.
Inputs will be commissioned on a short-term / part-time basis, and are best suited to freelancers and those without exclusivity to particular media outlets.
The main responsibilities and duties of this role will be:
Proofread, edits and improve stories, pieces and investigations ahead of publication. Provide guidance to contributors in order to improve their work;
Recruit contributors – as per IWPR.net and project requirements – and other beneficiaries for IWPR support in target areas identified;
Commission content for IWPR.net and for local/regional outlets, in-line with budget and timeline requirements;
To be successful in this role we anticipate that you would have:
Working experience as an editor, content commissioner &/or journalist for media outlets in sub-Saharan Africa;
Strong editing skills, including writing and proofreading abilities;
Relevant and strong written and spoken language skills in sub-Saharan African languages; expertise in English, French, and Portuguese is encouraged;.
Knowledge and experience of essential office applications, including MS Office;
Journalism related qualification(s).
