with some periodic off-site events and activities at the San Jose, CA location. Some evenings and weekends
may also be required.
JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Sacred Heart Community Service, located in San Jose, CA, is looking for a full-time, non-exempt Program
Coordinator in the Economic Justice Network Program within the Self-Sufficiency Division. The ideal candidate

programs through an anti-racism and anti-oppression worldview. For over 56 years, SHCS has been one of the
leading institutions addressing poverty in Santa Clara County through a strategy that combines meeting basic
needs, offering tools for self-sufficiency, and engaging the wider community to be involved.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Economic Justice Networks Program Associate to support growth in its programs and operations. The EJN
Program Associate will have a special emphasis on the foundation’s strategy in its Economic Justice Network
priority programs (especially Asset Development) while providing generalized support to the EJN programs as it
expands and grows its operations and activities. This position requires skill and adaptability across several
domains, including strong attention to detail, subject matter knowledge, and excellent communications. This
position is responsible for co-leading and overseeing community committees that lead the Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance (VITA) program, aimed at improving access to Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC), and a mutual support
network of our members.The Program Associate will report to and work closely with the EJN Organization
Manager, but will also be expected to be able to work independently. This is an in-person position based in San
Jose, CA.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Program Coordination (50 - 60%)
●
Implements the mission, strategies, and values of SHCS in part by providing volunteers with vision,
encouragement, challenge, modeling, training, and empowerment, particularly relative to the delivery of
coaching services.

Coordinates and supervises EJN services and program logistics per project/program assigned (may
include: VITA program, VITA summer program, Digital inclusion program, Financial Workshops, Silicon
Valley Guaranteed Income Project, Employment workshops/services and/or Public Benefits enrollment)
Serves as primary contact and organizer for the VITA program during VITA season.
Maintains strong relationships with stakeholders and members in the VITA network and supports
continued engagement through one-on-one meetings, phone calls, emails, and outreach for membership
events and volunteering.

Creates, coordinates, implements, and supports volunteer involvement in EJN workshops and training.
Adheres to strict confidentiality agreements as deemed appropriate.
Act as an Intake Specialist to filter all calls and emails to the right contact and program and follow up on
referrals.

Supports the core values of the organization by engaging members in our collective efforts.

Provides support and training in the development of leadership among members and
volunteers through program involvement such as co-leading programs and projects.
Develops and nurtures collaborative relationships with community members, volunteers, partners and
coworkers that will strategically position SHCS to build a community united to ensure that every child
and adult is free from poverty.

Supports the planning and implementation of agency-wide programs, events, training, and
outreach efforts.
Represents SHCS through outreach to schools, colleges, faith-based communities, businesses,
and community groups.
Coaching and Organizing (5% - 10%)
●
Implements coaching framework to guide members through a needs assessment and developing an
individualized work plan in the area of employment, finance or accessing public services/benefits.
Assists members to develop support systems by identifying and coordinating a variety of available
services necessary to maintain self-sufficiency, family stabilization, and a healthy interdependence with
our community. This includes assisting some participants with navigating local resources related to crisis
intervention, advocacy, problem-solving, and other appropriate interventions.

Supports EJN’s advisory and action committees by holding 1:1 with members interested in volunteering,
becoming a promotor or participating in a committee as well as supporting all EJN community events.
Administrative (15 – 20%)
●
Develops, tracks, reports, and analyzes program goals and objectives in accordance with
strategic and operating plans, including, but not limited to: intake form, credit report,
coach’s appointment notes, analysis, and action plans.

Maintenance accurate and timely data entry for all assigned programs / services in databases like
Salesforce, VSAS, Google Drive, etc.
Works with the Economic Justice Manager to monitor grant requirements ensuring all service delivery
goals are met and/or exceeded.
Supports continuous learning, evaluation, and improvement within the Economic Justice team.
REQUIRED:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Strong commitment to our vision of a community united to ensure that every child and adult is free from
poverty.

Read, speak, and write in English and Spanish.
Bachelor’s degree in social work, social science, education, public health, or related field or 2-4 years of
equivalent experience may be substituted for a college degree.
●
One or more years of demonstrated success working with and developing leadership among volunteers
and/or interns.
●
●
Experience providing culturally competent, supportive services, and linkages to community resources.
Outstanding customer service skills. Excellent public speaking, writing and communication skills. Strong
communication skills, including the ability to deliver difficult messages with compassion and to
communicate respectfully with families in stressful situations.

Flexible (able to work some evenings and Saturdays), compassionate, and supportive attitude. Ability to
thrive in a flexible, fast-paced environment, while maintaining a positive, solution-oriented approach.

Experience with providing culturally competent support and leadership development. Sensitivity to
issues surrounding households experiencing homelessness, substance use, mental illness, or disabilities.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and to work independently with limited
supervision when necessary.
Computer literacy including proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Google Suite and ability to
quickly learn and develop proficiency with tracking database systems such as Salesforce.
Required to work during our annual VITA season (which includes some evenings and Saturdays) from
January to April and June to October (subject to change based on program need).
Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds without assistance. Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. with assistance and up
to 50 lbs. with assistance. The position requires computer use/walking/sitting/standing for 6 hours per
day. Able to walk for an extended period of time. The physical demands described here are
representative of what an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Must complete a DMV and criminal background check, and qualify to be insured under SHCS driving
policy.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

One or more years of experience working in a community based organization, preferably in the field of
human services or related fields.
●

One or more years experience with curriculum training and development preferred.
Positive attitude with great organization skills.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
The Economic Justice Network Program Coordinator reports to the Economic Justice Network Organizing
Manager.
COMPENSATION:
This is an non-exempt position with a starting wage ranging from $25.80 - $28.50 / hour commensurate with
experience. Excellent benefits include fully paid medical insurance for employees and majority paid medical
