Economic Advisor, IGF

The Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) is an intergovernmental organization responsible for advancing the application of leading sustainable development practices as they affect mining and communities in mining areas. The IGF was formed in 2005 and currently has 85 member countries, providing a global forum among governments, the private sector, international organizations, and civil society groups.

IISD has served as the Secretariat for the IGF since October 2015. The Secretariat’s functions include organizing the IGF annual general meeting, working with the executive committee and member governments in finalizing and executing a program of work, providing and supporting services to members, building partnerships among key organizations, conducting focused analytic work, and supporting effective communications among IGF members. A strong emphasis of the IGF is to enhance governance capacities at the national level in the mining sector, including best practices in regulatory and policy instruments.

Job Overview

The IGF is seeking a skilled economic advisor to support our new project on critical minerals. The economic advisor will play a key role in analyzing and developing strategies to bridge the supply gap in critical minerals supply chains. This position involves comprehensive economic assessments, policy recommendations, and stakeholder engagement to ensure sustainable and efficient supply chain management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contributing to evidence-based, policy-oriented research on critical minerals and mineral supply chains;
  • Supporting guidance document implementation, including contributing to the delivery of technical assistance and capacity-building programs for members;
  • Supporting the design and delivery of IGF events, training, and sustainability forums;
  • Participating in member outreach and networking activities as required;
  • Participating in international project missions, arranging elements of missions as appropriate. Assisting in communicating the work of the program and its components to a broader audience, including attending events and developing outreach materials, such as reports, blogs, and brochures;
  • Supporting the IGF in the preparation of donor and annual reporting;
  • Keeping up to date regarding emerging issues related to the IGF program;
  • Collaborating with IISD staff, affiliates, partners and consultants in the design and implementation of projects.

Job Description:

  • Supply chain analysis: Conduct thorough economic analysis of critical minerals supply chains, identifying bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Market research: Analyze global and regional market trends, demand and supply dynamics, and pricing strategies for critical minerals.
  • Policy development: Develop and recommend policies to enhance the resilience and sustainability of critical minerals supply chains.
  • Stakeholder engagement: Collaborate with government officials, industry stakeholders, and international partners to gather insights and build consensus on supply chain strategies.
  • Strategic planning: Contribute to the development of strategic plans to bridge the supply gap, ensuring alignment with environmental and social sustainability goals.
  • Reporting: Prepare detailed reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders, summarizing findings, recommendations, and progress.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Advanced degree in economics, business, or a related field.
  • Experience: 5–10 years of experience in economic analysis, preferably within the mining or minerals sector. Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with proficiency in data analysis tools.
  • Knowledge: In-depth understanding of global mineral markets, supply chain dynamics, and economic policy development.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex economic concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Collaboration: Proven ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders across different sectors and regions.

Reporting Relationship

The Economic Advisor, IGF reports to the Deputy Director, IGF or their designate.

Location: Remote, with regional and international travel as required. This position is open to candidates resident in the CET or similar time zone: Belgium, Burkina Faso, France, Germany, Italy, Kenya, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Rwanda, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Uganda or United Kingdom.

Salary:  Salary commensurate with experience and location
