Ecological Restoration Client Services Director

We are currently seeking a skilled Ecological Restoration Client Services Director that can lead and contribute to the growth of our ecological restoration practice and support SWCA’s ecological restoration projects throughout the U.S.

The ideal candidate will be required to combine high-level technical expertise with commercial acumen and leadership in relation to growing our ecological restoration practice.  The candidate will need to demonstrate significant prior experience in the planning, design, and implementation of ecological restoration projects in terrestrial and aquatic environments, wetland delineation, biological resource inventories and special status species surveys, multi-agency resource permitting, environmental impact analyses (NEPA) as it pertains to biological resources, vulnerability assessments, mitigation banking, habitat conservation planning and implementation of monitoring plans for public and private clients.

This position will have reporting and communication requirements to Client Services Senior Vice President. This position can be based in any SWCA office.  Highly qualified, remote candidates will also be seriously considered.

What you will accomplish

  • Manage complex planning, permitting, design and implementation of ecological restoration and enhancement projects including any of the following: streams/rivers, freshwater or brackish water wetland, coastal marsh, barrier island, living shoreline, hydrologic, sediment diversion, fish passage and/or coastal restoration.
  • Lead business development efforts to foster growth of the ecological restoration practice and support proposal efforts in conjunction with the restoration team.
  • Work with the national ecological restoration team and the restoration engineering team on projects throughout the United States.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering Restoration Director with a focus on stream design, wetland design, nature based resiliency, habitat restoration and monitoring, and living shoreline design projects across the United States.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of restoration specialists working on regional and national projects.
  • Assist offices, sub-regions and regions with identifying staff with restoration ecology expertise, including co-leading strategic recruitment for senior staff.
  • Keep projects on schedule and on budget and work with the local operational director to develop opportunities, business plans, business development targets, and sales goals on a regular basis.
  • Work closely with SWCA’s resource scientists and environmental planners, managers, and directors throughout the company to promote SWCA’s business interests in adherence to its mission, vision, and values.

Experience and qualifications for success

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, or closely related field required; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • At least 15 years of progressive experience in the ecological restoration and natural resources field.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to produce high quality written reports and verbal presentations.
  • Proven business development acumen and strong, existing client relationships.
  • Extensive working knowledge of federal and state laws (e.g., National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act) governing natural resource management.
  • Demonstrated experience managing, preparing, and obtaining waters permits for Clean Water Act Section 404/401
  • Experience in other areas of natural resources consulting such as wildlife surveys, botanical surveys, or National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) document preparation.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with Project Managers, Natural Resources Team Leads, and Directors across the company.
  • Ability to multi-task regularly in a fast-paced environment with multiple changes; work under pressure & meet tight deadlines.
  • Maintain focus on quality deliverables and ensure implementation of stringent QA/QC to ensure our work is of the highest quality and defensibility.
  • Prior experience in leading and supporting the development of successful restoration ecology proposals and leading and participating in client interviews.
  • Prior successful experience supervising and mentoring staff to assist the overall team in professional development goals and growth.
