Early Childhood and Food Systems Fall Intern – Nutrition Policy and Early Childhood Programs Team

Position Available

The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) seeks an intern to work with FRAC’s nutrition policy and early childhood programs team in the Fall of 2022. The intern will work with the team to conduct interviews, analyze primary qualitative data, synthesize results, and generate reports and resources in support of FRAC’s Early Childhood projects, specifically on a Farm to Early Care and Education (ECE) Leveraging the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) project.  This internship may be done remotely.

Organizational Background

FRAC is the nation’s leading policy and advocacy organization dedicated to fighting hunger and injustice. FRAC works to improve and implement effective public policies and public-private partnerships to eradicate hunger and undernutrition in the United States. FRAC engages in research, policy analysis and advocacy, coalition-building, outreach, technical assistance and training, and an array of communications strategies. In partnership with hundreds of national, state, and local nonprofit organizations, public agencies, corporations, and labor organizations, FRAC addresses hunger and food insecurity, and poverty as their root cause.

Responsibilities and Potential Projects

  • Work with a diverse group of national partners, state agencies, program operators, clinics, sponsors, cities, counties, and private nonprofits and others to implement best practices that strengthen the positive impact of and increase efficacy of and access to CACFP, WIC, and sustainable, equitable food systems.
  • Analyze primary qualitative data, coding the data and synthesizing into themes.
  • Organizing, scheduling, and helping to facilitate qualitative interviews.
  • Write persuasive analytic materials, guides, outreach materials, briefs, and reports for use by advocates, government agencies, policy makers, program operators, and the media.
  • Assist with creation of qualitative data visualizations.
  • Assist nutrition policy and early childhood program team with additional research and project needs.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Earned or working towards a Master’s degree in public health, nutrition, public policy, early childhood, food systems, or other relevant area.
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative data analysis. Experience coding and synthesizing qualitative data a plus.
  • Commitment to working for social justice and racial equity.
  • Very strong writing, interpersonal, analytical, facilitation, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of groups and individuals.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and achieve goals.
  • Experience and/or demonstrated interest in food insecurity, child health, poverty, nutrition policy and/or nutrition-related issues.
  • Ability to work independently as part of a larger team.
  • Understanding of hunger and poverty and their impact upon communities, families, and individuals a plus.
  • Knowledge of food systems and federal nutrition programs a plus.

Benefits

This internship may be completed either to meet course/program requirements and/or as a paid internship. Compensation is $17.80/hour for the paid internship.

Start Date

The start and end dates of the internship are flexible, but the ideal candidate will be available for a 14-week internship. Interns are expected to work at least 35 hours per week.
