Early Childhood and Food Systems Fall Intern – Nutrition Policy and Early Childhood Programs Team

Position Available

The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) seeks an intern to work with FRAC’s nutrition policy and early childhood programs team in the Fall/Winter of 2023. The intern will lead a landscape analysis of successful outreach strategies and lessons learned for the WIC program. The analysis is part of the larger WIC Community Innovation and Outreach Project (WIC CIAO). The goal of the landscape analysis is to assess effective communication and community outreach methods for increasing participation among those eligible but not utilizing WIC services, especially among historically marginalized populations. The landscape analysis report will draw primarily on recent publications and gray literature, research from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, particularly the Food and Nutrition Service, and from the expertise of the WIC CIAO Project Team and Advisory Board. This internship will be done remotely.

FRAC works to improve and implement effective public policies and public-private partnerships to eradicate hunger and undernutrition in the United States. FRAC engages in research, policy analysis and advocacy, coalition-building, outreach, technical assistance and training, and an array of communications strategies. In partnership with hundreds of national, state, and local nonprofit organizations, public agencies, corporations, and labor organizations, FRAC addresses hunger and food insecurity, and poverty as their root cause.

Responsibilities and Potential Projects

  • Review of peer-reviewed scientific papers and published gray literature

  • Organization and synthesis of feedback from experts on the Project Team and Advisory Board

  • Synthesis of learnings, including effective strategies and lessons to be learned from areas for improvement

  • Analysis of contextual factors that are important to consider when conducting WIC outreach among historically marginalized populations

  • Lead writing of landscape analysis report and development of any related tables and figures

Skills and Qualifications

  • Earned or working towards a Master’s degree in public health, nutrition, public policy, early childhood, food systems, or other relevant area.
  • Experience conducting reviews of scientific literature, assessing study quality and extracting principal findings.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working for social justice and embedding equity practices into research.
  • Very strong writing, interpersonal, analytical, facilitation, and organizational skills, with tools to systematize a large volume of research.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and achieve goals.
  • Experience and/or demonstrated interest in food insecurity, child health, poverty, nutrition policy and/or nutrition-related issues.
  • Ability to work independently as part of a larger team.
  • Understanding of the WIC program is a plus.
  • Familiarity with implementation science is a plus.

Benefits

This internship may be completed either to meet course/program requirements and/or as a paid internship. Compensation is $17.80/hour for the paid internship.

Start Date

The start and end dates of the internship are flexible, but the ideal candidate will be available for a 10-week internship. Interns are expected to work 15-20 hours per week.
