Hivos works for climate justice, gender justice and civic rights in 40 countries, with a diverse worldwide staff of over 300 people. In 2023 we conducted a thorough audit of our current internal Diversity, Equity and Inclusion landscape. The audit resulted in a commitment to far-reaching changes in our organizational culture and power relations, as well as HR policies.
As DEI Change Manager, you will coordinate and help to architect this change process. You will also play an important strategic role, as you will join at a moment when we are commencing work on a new global strategy in which DEI and decolonization will be central pillars.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and lead a comprehensive DEI strategy:
- Ensure the 2023 DEI assessment and initial action plan is fully developed into a comprehensive, coherent strategy and plan aligned with our mission, values and strategic goals.
- Support members of the senior leadership team to identify and effect changes to policies and practices in their respective portfolios and teams, in order to promote diversity, feminist leadership and anti-racism at all levels and across all functions within the organization.
- Coordinate the different initiatives included in the DEI plan, providing technical guidance to action owners, and ensuring that interventions are coherent, well planned and sequenced, effectively implemented, and regularly communicated.
- Regularly evaluate, update and improve the DEI strategy and plan based on data, feedback, and emerging best practices.

- Develop and implement initiatives to bring “The Hivos We Want” to life and create a psychologically safe workplace for employees of all backgrounds and identities, overcoming lack of trust and fear of conflict in order to foster greater commitment, accountability and results.
- Develop and implement training programs to improve cross-cultural competencies and address racism, homophobia, misogyny, and other forms of discrimination or unconscious bias.
- In collaboration with the CEO and COO, facilitate regular dialogue and open communication about DEI issues with the International Works Council, Hivos hubs, other staff affinity groups and staff and partners at large.
- Drive data-driven decision-making:
- Work with the HR team and other relevant departments to collect and analyze data on key DEI metrics to measure progress and inform strategic priorities.
- Develop and implement metrics, tools and systems to track the effectiveness of DEI initiatives and outcomes.
- Translate data into actionable insights and recommendations for leadership.
- Build and maintain external partnerships:
- Collaborate with external stakeholders including diverse communities, donors, advocacy groups, and thought leaders.
- Represent the organization on DEI-related matters at conferences and events.
- Management and Oversight:
- Develop and manage the budget for culture change, awareness and training.
- Commission and manage external service providers or consultants for this work as needed.
- Monitor spending and progress on other agreed DEI investments not directly managed by you.
Qualifications:
