About HOT
Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) sits at the nexus of participatory mapping, community-led development, humanitarian response, open data and tech. With a talented and diverse team spread around the globe, HOT is an NGO that supports a dynamic global community of thousands of dedicated volunteers using maps and open data for humanitarian response and the Sustainable Development Goals. Working with humanitarian and development partners like the Red Cross, Médecins Sans Frontières, UN agencies, governments and others, the HOT community maps in solidarity with those affected by or at risk of disaster, contributing the maps and data aid workers need to do their lifesaving work.
In 2020 the work of the HOT community was recognized by TED’s Audacious Project, a collaborative philanthropic initiative that serves as a springboard for social impact on a grand scale, leading to an exciting new phase of growth. HOT is expanding its activities: opening four regional hubs and scaling up its support to local mapping communities with the audacious goal of mapping an area home to one billion people in 94 countries at high risk of disasters or experiencing poverty - mapping with communities before they are in crisis.
About the Open Mapping Hub - Latin America and the Caribbean
The Caribbean is a region of diversity which shares the common threat of natural disasters based on the geographic location. The small country sizes and rough terrain of these developing countries makes it inherently difficult to recover from these frequently occurring events. Every year, the island nations and territories stand guard to the inevitable passing of tropical storms and hurricanes from the north Atlantic Ocean. Rough terrains of these volcanic landforms have most of the population concentrated in coastal and low-lying regions. This increases the vulnerability of flooding and storm surge to its inhabitants. Further exacerbating these existing conditions is the potential risk for earthquakes which present themselves more violently per occurrence than other regions with this similar threat. Bearing also in mind the increasing threat of climate change, this array of destructive events and the existing developmental issues of the region, creates the need for concerted efforts in disaster preparedness, and response on a basis above the norm.
HOT as an organization was born out of the need for such a response in the Caribbean region itself, through efforts of the Haiti 2010 earthquake. The decentralization based on the large number of small countries makes it difficult for individual countries to attain the relevant resources and data needed to buffer the effects of natural disasters. The need for a dedicated specialist regarding the different issues at all stages of the disaster cycle from a mapping and data collection perspective, would be a natural imperative within HOT’s Caribbean team.
