The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is an award-winning independent think tank working to accelerate solutions for a stable climate, sustainable resource management, and fair economies. We are currently looking for a Director, Talent & Culture in our Ottawa, Toronto, or Winnipeg office to lead in creating, implementing, and executing human resources (HR) policies and programs and in managing all aspects of employee relations and development. The Director will also lead talent acquisition and retention, organizational development, performance management, compensation and benefits administration, and internal communications.

Reporting to the Vice-President, Operations and Business Transformation, the Director implements programs that are aligned with and support the corporate strategy. This position is responsible for monitoring and resolving issues regarding various aspects of the operations. The Director will ensure the system-wide implementation of company policies and procedures and find ways to improve them while providing a positive atmosphere of growth and learning.

As a member of the Senior Management team, the Director contributes to the long-term strategic vision of the organization, working cooperatively with other members of the team to ensure the long-term relevance and viability of IISD.

Responsibilities

  • Create, administer, and monitor the annual HR strategic business plan and accompanying budget.
  • Consult with various department leads to provide proactive and strategic guidance and support for organizational planning and development initiatives that align the HR agenda to key strategies and initiatives.
  • Lead, manage, and coordinate the analysis, development, preparation, and issuance of written HR policies, operating guidelines, and procedures. Ensure consistent application and monitor compliance.
  • Manage and provide support to the management team on the yearly performance review.
  • Lead and provide support to the Board/President related to executive compensation, group benefits, and succession planning.
  • Lead the HR team, providing guidance and coaching for HR employees, and encourage continuous learning and development.
  • Manage the compensation and benefits program.
  • Oversee the payroll and benefits responsibilities, ensuring accurate processing and year-end reporting.
  • Create, manage, and maintain Occupational Health & Safety programs, including emergency response plans, accommodation requests, disability management, and return to work.
  • Provide coaching and conflict resolution support to the leadership team on people management issues, including but not limited to terminations, respectful workplace complaints, and general employee relations.
  • Monitor and oversee employment law compliance across IISD’s various operational jurisdictions, including in North America and Europe.
  • Direct HR planning relating to recruitment and selection, including immigration matters, work permits, and job classifications.
  • Develop learning initiatives to support internal capacity building, organizational learning, and leadership development. Coach leaders as required.
  • Work closely with the internal communications team to provide a regular stream of relevant employee communications that address the status of new priorities, HR information, and the roll-out of programs, etc.
  • Champion a culture of equity, inclusion, and diversity.
  • Foster a positive working environment and positive employee morale.
  • Responsible for regulatory compliance, including the HRIS audit and quality assurance, to ensure data integrity and accuracy.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in HR, business, or organization development.
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in HR positions.
  • CPHR designation or working toward obtaining the designation is an asset.
  • Demonstrated success in strategic thinking, planning, and implementation across an organization, both in-person and remote-based.
  • Experience in the management of a benefits and compensation program.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and coaching skills.
  • Adaptable to organizational change and growth with a demonstrated ability to work with a high level of autonomy.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop HR staff members.
  • Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment. Must include Excel and skills in database management and record keeping.
  • General knowledge of Canadian provincial and international employment laws and practices.
  • Evidence of the practice of a high level of confidentiality.
  • Requirement for occasional travel nationally and internationally.
  • Must be currently eligible to work in Canada.
  • French fluency is desirable.

Salary: $117,500 –$148,000 (CAD) salary, based on experience and location
