What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for a Director of People & Performance who can lead key elements of the employee life cycle and experience. They will provide oversight and strategic vision for employee selection and onboarding procedures, compensation and payroll, talent and performance management, wage and labor compliance, benefits administration, HRIS management, and employee engagement. The Director will work closely with other People & Culture staff and leadership staff from the other internal departments, manage a small team of interns and direct reports, and communicate on a regular basis with Kids in the Game’s network of 100+ coaches.
The ideal candidate for this position has 4+ years of experience working in human resources and people management, a strong knowledge of labor, wage, and employment law, the ability to build authentic relationships, and the desire to be part of a collaborative team culture. They should have a passion for youth-based programs, sports and play, and developing talent in a younger workforce. They should be able to connect with people at all levels, listen and act with empathy, and make decisions that will lead to the greatest social impact for our kids and staff.
The key functions of your role will include:
Employee selection and onboarding:
- Design the talent acquisition, interviewing, and orientation process for part time staff, seasonal summer staff, and full time employees in collaboration with the Director of Recruitment & Partnerships
- Assist in interviewing and hiring qualified job applicants, particularly for seasonal leadership positions and full time roles; develop interviewing models and projects to assess candidate skills & competencies
- Collaborate with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for current / new roles and develop job descriptions
Compensation & Payroll:
- Oversee time management and payroll systems for 30+ full time employees and 150+ seasonal employees
- Administer the bi-monthly payroll process for school year employees and biweekly payroll process for summer camp employees
- Analyze trends in compensation and benefits; research and propose competitive base and incentive pay programs to ensure the organization attracts and retains top talent
Talent and Performance Management:
- Create frameworks for job evaluation, learning & development, and performance review processes to ensure a high-performing environment and build a culture of learning and growth
- Create learning and development programs and initiatives to strengthen competencies across the board; provide internal PD opportunities and identify external resources for group-based and self-directed learning
- Provide counseling and guidance to managers and employees to improve work relationships, build moral, and increase productivity and retention
- Oversee employee disciplinary meetings, exit interviews, terminations, and investigations in collaboration with direct managers
Wage & Labor Compliance:
- Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; review internal policies and practices to maintain compliance; develop new policies as needed
- Document staff incidents, injuries, and claims; submit required forms and reports to insurance companies and governing agencies, including NYS Workers’ Compensation Board, NYS Paid Family Leave, NYS Dept of Labor
Benefits administration:
- Manage relationships with benefit brokers; obtain and provide competitive and cost-effective employee benefits plans and programs
- Review benefits programs annually and work with Chief People Officer to identify additional or supplemental benefits
- Update monthly, quarterly, and annual benefits enrollment reports; develop benefits campaigns to enroll more staff in health insurance plans, 401K plans, wellness programs, etc.
HRIS Management:
- Become the administrator for the organization's HRIS platform, which includes our ATS, payroll, time management, and performance management modules
- Maintain accurate employee data and records, including interview forms, hiring recommendations, promotions, transfers, terminations, employee performance reviews, background checks, references, etc.
- Administer HRIS training program to train employees on the Self-Service App; ensure high utilization rates among full time and part time employees
Employee Engagement:
- Promote employee engagement through regular, personal contact with part time and full time staff to promote strong working relationships, positive office culture, and a sense of inclusion & belonging
- Work with Employee Relations Coordinator to organize and attend staff events throughout the year, including semi-annual work retreats
- Review current employee engagement and appreciation plan, research new rewards options, and make recommendations for new strategies
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, & project management tools (e.g. Asana, Monday, Rippling)
- Proficiency using SaaS payroll tools (e.g. Gusto, ADP, Paycom)
- Proficiency with HRIS and talent management systems
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required. Master’s Degree preferred
- A minimum of 3-4 years of human resource management experience preferred, including a combination of HR, benefits admin, payroll admin, and labor / wage compliance experience
- SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification is highly desired. If not currently certified, candidates must be willing to complete the certification within 12 months
Other Requirements:
- This is an OT Exempt position with in-person work expectations
- COVID-19 vaccination is mandatory and proof of vaccination is required
- NYC Department of Education fingerprinting clearance
Salary Range: $70,000-$75,000 base salary, bi-annual bonuses & total rewards package
