Resource Development (RD) works to raise private funds, and to cultivate and maintain relationships with private donors. Mercy Corps’ global fundraising team manages best in class partnerships with leading companies and foundations and relationships with individual donors. We raise unrestricted revenue that bolsters the organization’s operational and strategic capacity, as well as restricted funding that supports Mercy Corps’ innovative global programming. Mercy Corps in Europe’s Fundraising team is a crucial component of the organization’s global resource development efforts. The team consists of two primary revenue streams: corporate and foundation partnerships and individual giving. The team operates under the strategic leadership of the Chief Development Officer and is composed of team members who work directly with donors and those who maintain the systems and tools that support successful fundraising.
General Position Summary
The Director of Fundraising is responsible for managing Mercy Corps’ fundraising strategy and operations in Europe, with a focus on companies, foundations, and high net worth individuals. This role will serve on Mercy Corps Europe’s Senior Leadership team, as well as the global Resource Development leadership team. They will ensure that the European fundraising team has the systems and tools in place to support successful fundraising. The Director will review the European team’s existing fundraising programs and portfolios and develop a multi-year strategy to scale unrestricted and restricted revenue from private European donors. This strategy will be developed in partnership with the Chief Development Officer and Executive Director in Europe, and align with Mercy Corps’ fundraising strategies in the US market.
Successful candidates will have a proven track record of managing donor relationships and fundraising teams. They will be knowledgeable about current and emerging philanthropic trends in Europe, and identify opportunities for Mercy Corps that lead to growth in private revenue.
● Work with fundraisers to manage their portfolios and downstream team members, including setting goals for each donor and micro and macro level strategy;
● Ensure that all team members, receive the support and coaching they need to meet their goals and do their best work;
● Orient additional new team members as necessary;
● Guide the European fundraising team in navigating Mercy Corps’ internal structures, relationships, and processes;
● Represent the overall European fundraising function on the MCE Senior Leadership Team;
● Partner with the Chief Development Officer in engaging the Board Development Committee to advance European donor relationships;
● Partner with policy/advocacy and communications counterparts in Europe to build Mercy Corps’ profile with European audiences;
● Serve on Resource Development’s leadership team and contribute to department-wide initiatives.
● Manage European revenue and expense forecasting for corporate finance and for internal RD purposes;
● Manage the European fundraising team’s budget and expenditures;
● In coordination with other Resource Development team leads, set up accountability and performance management systems to ensure that all team members are performing at acceptable levels. Take corrective action if performance is below expectations;

Reports Directly To: Chief Development Officer
Works Directly With: HIP Team, Corporate Partnerships Team, Foundation Partnerships team, VP of Marcomms, Corporate Finance, European Senior Leadership Team, Office of the CEO, programs teams.
Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work. ● BA required or equivalent professional experience
● 10+ years of professional experience, including fundraising and direct donor management;
● Previous management experience and ability to hold people accountable in inspiring ways;
● Detail oriented and able to set and meet short- and long-term goals;
● Demonstrated success adjusting strategies based on metrics;
● Demonstrated success in new business development;
● Prior experience developing and managing a budget;
● Exceptional oral and written communication skills;
● Ability to navigate organizational complexity and to support matrixed teams;
● Ability to work well as a team member, as well as independently;
● Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
● Sound knowledge of computer programs, Microsoft Office and database software (ideally Raiser’s Edge).
The successful candidate will be an exceptional manager of people and projects who is analytical, yet flexible; personable, yet firm. It will be critical to add constructively to a sense of team and shared goals, within Mercy Corps Europe and the overall global Resource Development team. Demonstrated strong team leadership skills and commitment to individual development. Strong communication skills and a commitment to "inclusiveness" and consensus-building. This person will demonstrate creativity and flexibility, as well as a proven ability to learn quickly and be accountable for results.
This position is based either in London or Edinburgh. There will be travel required to key European markets and there may be international travel of 5-10 days/ two trips each year.
