The Island School, a not-for-profit organization based in The Bahamas, was founded to create and support transformational educational experiences with the vision of leadership effecting change, on the island of Eleuthera. The diverse educational initiatives, including our High School Semester and Summer Term, Deep Creek Middle School, Elementary Learning Center, and our Community Engagement and Partnerships, deliver unique educational journeys in conjunction with the authentic and meaningful work our organization undertakes in research and sustainable development at the Cape Eleuthera Institute, our research, and innovation hub. Job Summary
The Director of Facilities & Infrastructure will play an essential role in managing innovative and highly complex sustainable systems, maintaining the essential infrastructure of our well-established island campus, and leading a team of individuals in all aspects of facilities management, including the maintenance of the organization’s fleet of vehicles and boats. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative, highly adaptable problem solver, who is able to successfully manage multiple competing priorities to ensure the organization’s smooth and efficient operation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead in the implementation of a comprehensive infrastructure plan for the long, medium, and short term that aligns with the School’s Mission and Vision
- Lead, supervise, and motivate Facilities team members to achieve objectives that align with the organization’s overall strategic plan
- Assist with preparation of the annual facilities management and operational budget
- Develop, implement, and manage processes for preventative maintenance across a campus of complex sustainable systems and operations
- Oversee the maintenance of the existing sustainable infrastructure plant which includes solar and wind energy, rainwater collection, a marine science wetlab, waste management systems, and a permaculture farm
- Oversee all facilities undertakings and projects, ensuring that they are delivered on-time, in-full, on budget, and in alignment with established safety standards and the organization’s sustainability values
- Engage and oversee outside contractors for specific projects as necessary
- Prepare comprehensive budgets of project costs, including materials, costs of labor, and time expended
- Perform or facilitate inspections of all parts of the organization’s grounds and facilities; approve renovations, maintenance, and installations when necessary
- Ensure efficient allocation of resources (including personnel, materials, and time) within all areas of responsibility
- Ensure the safety of facilities work and work-site, and adherence to best practices in risk management
- Review and update organizational safety standards quarterly and ensure compliance with local regulations and best practice
- Draft reports and prepare data analysis for review by the Board of Directors, Senior Leadership, and Department Heads
- Serve as a member of the Risk Management Committee, creating and sustaining a culture of safety throughout our daily operations
Education, Experience & Skills:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or Construction Management or significant hands-on experience with proven success
- Minimum 5-7 years experience in a similar capacity at an educational institution, resort, residential facility, or similar environment, with at least 2-3 years of experience leading a team
- Strong ability to manage teams, providing appropriate support, oversight, and inspiration to create a common vision in line with the organization’s strategic goals. Must be able to work effectively with people from different backgrounds and demonstrate commitment to the mission and vision of the school.
- Working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, as well as general building practices
- Familiarity with and enthusiasm for renewable energy systems, including solar and wind power and solar hot water maintenance and installation
- Waterfront/ Marina/ Boat maintenance and management experience a plus
- Strong organizational skills and a commitment to systematizing campus maintenance
- Knowledge of facility regulations and safety standards (OSHA, EPA, AD, CFC, NFPA)
- Strong project management skills
- Experience with management and oversight of purchasing, inventory controls, supplies and equipment
- Experience with budget management, forecasting and capital expenditure planning
- Ability to use standard software applications
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative and proactively problem solve, anticipate needs, and work independently
- Ability to exercise flexibility and to work collaboratively across departments in order to accomplish goals
- Effective decision-making skills in order to minimize / manage risk (Risk Assessment)
- Strong problem-solving skills, encourages new innovative solutions when appropriate
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal and community engagement skills
- Emergency, EHS management, hurricane and disaster preparedness knowledge a plus
