What is the opportunity?
The Director, Engineering Standards and Quality is responsible for leading the production of documentation and training materials on technical engineering and construction standards for safe water, sanitation, and hygiene projects. This position will also be responsible for directing and conducting training events on the use of the produced materials. Additionally, this position will manage a team focused on these efforts. Fulfilling these responsibilities will require a commitment to servant leadership, sound engineering principles, and excellent written and verbal communication skills. This full-time position reports to the Senior Director of Engineering and Innovation and is Charleston-based, although remote applicants will be considered. Travel to remote locations in developing countries is required. As needs arise, candidates must be prepared to travel one to three months out of the year, with trip lengths ranging from one to four weeks.
A successful Director of Engineering, Standards and Quality will:
Maintain a strong Christian witness and model servant leadership to colleagues, partners, the communities we serve, and the public.
Engage and participate in prayer before and after team meetings.
Lead and participate in biblically based staff devotions.
Work in a posture of humble service to God and others.
Direct the development of engineering and construction standards for worldwide projects, including leading team members focused on these efforts.
Work with global Program leaders to ensure adherence to engineering and construction standards within all ministry projects.
Direct and conduct means of training for global staff.
Train others on how to conduct training events.
Lead relevant research initiatives and interviews while ensuring timely and accurate information.
Work across engineering disciplines and gain a base level of understanding as necessary.
Produce detailed explanations of complex technical concepts and distill those concepts into easy-to-understand descriptions appropriate for the intended audience.
Ensure that final products are of high quality, including accuracy of minor details and consistency with Water Mission style and messaging, and that they have received appropriate review and approval from ministry leaders.
Prepare and give presentations to other departments, country program staff, and outside entities.
Give knowledgeable proposals to ministry leaders on disseminating produced content that will aid in effectively training global staff and partners.
Track and measure the effectiveness of produced content.
Provide leadership and development to direct reports. Work with staff to foster an environment of professional growth in alignment with Water Mission’s strategies and objectives. Consult peer management and senior leaders to successfully align departmental resources and priorities across Water Mission.
Manage and develop assigned staff and establish goals and objectives; coach and manage performance, including discipline, motivation, and annual reviews; support continuous learning and development that enhances individual performance and organizational capability.
Partner with other departments to incorporate the Living Water strategy into developed content.
Ensure and maintain the global consistency of all developed content.
Direct content review processes as the ministry grows and technology shifts.
Develop and manage project scopes, schedules, and budgets.
Manage multiple simultaneous projects.
Maintain good communication with multiple team members across multiple countries and time zones.
Maintain good communications with outside entities.
Manage competing priorities and concurrent deadlines.
Work within cross-cultural environments and overcome stereotypes and language barriers.
Lend support to disaster response activities as needed at headquarters, in field offices, and unknown remote locations.

What is required?

Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Chemical, or Environmental Engineering – Electrical, Mechanical, and other Engineering degrees considered.
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) preferred.
8+ years of engineering experience preferred, with a minimum of two years of experience leading and managing others.
Knowledgeable skills with office computer programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook) and familiarity with engineering programs such as AutoCAD, EPANET, etc.
Excellent relationship skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent analytical skills.
High attention to detail.
Experience in developing countries and cross-cultural communication preferred.
Experience in WASH engineering preferred.
Foreign language skills preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly articulate ideas and feedback constructively.
Home internet bandwidth strong enough to support video conferencing and other job-related responsibilities.
