PolicyLink is hiring a

Director of Communcations

🇺🇸 Oakland, CA, US 📝 FULL-TIME 🎯 EXPERIENCED

About Liberation in a Generation

Liberation in a Generation (LibGen) is seeking an experienced, full-time Director of Communications to serve as a critical member of the senior leadership team. This dynamic, creative person will be responsible for leading a team to execute a strategic communications plan and managing and supporting a team to refine and amplify our worldview as well as advise our partners. Formed in 2018, Liberation in a Generation is a national movement support organization building the power of people of color to totally transform the economy—who controls it, how it works, and most importantly, for whom. We bring together advocates, community organizers, economists, and other proven and emerging leaders of color across the country to build a Liberation Economy, within one generation. Liberation in a Generation is incubating in PolicyLink. We aim to create political and economic change where people of color prosper. This means tearing down systems of oppression that extract from, devalue, and exploit Black, Latinx, low- and moderate-income Asians, and Indigenous people. It means building a Liberation Economy where all people of color have our basic needs met, are safe from harm, are valued, and belong.

Position Overview

A core part of the work of Liberation in a Generation is telling a new story of our economy: calling out oppression and calling in liberation. We both support leaders of color in their storytelling and messaging, host our own platforms for telling that story, and partner with outlets to amplify that story. Communications at Liberation in a Generation is both about internal worldview development as well as nurturing external partnerships. Although media placement and marketing are important, this Director of Communications role will prioritize creating narrative, producing sharp analysis of current events, and tending to brand consistency.

The teams at Liberation in a Generation are highly collaborative and nimble. The ideal candidate is a team player, can develop systems to facilitate cross-team collaboration, and uses sound judgment when working autonomously. LibGen is a relatively new and growing organization, so the ideal candidate can adapt to change, communicate their vision, and further cultivate the voice and tone of Liberation in a Generation.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in a senior leadership team that guides the strategic direction of the organization and ensures strong and open communication channels organization wide.
  • Set and execute annual team goals toward the organization and team’s long-term vision.

  • Identify and forge new partnerships with mission-aligned organizations that advance our goals.
  • Overseeing the management of LibGen communication platforms (websites, social media, etc.)
  • Collaborate with the Chief Strategy Officer in implementing organizational projects related to development and fundraising.
  • Maintain and deepen brand identity through visual, written, and audio communications and assets.
  • Support the Co-Executive Directors on producing and publishing thought pieces.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to racial and economic justice.
  • At least 5-7 years of experience in communications experience, especially with a focus on narrative and storytelling.
  • 3-5 years of management and leadership experience with developing and executing goals and guiding a team.
  • Creative collaborator with experience centering the voices and realities of people of color.
  • Robust portfolio of compelling published writings.
  • Creative thinker with the ability to prioritize, execute, and manage multiple projects through to completion and excellence while meeting tight deadlines—even in the face of obstacles.
