About the Position
The Director of Black Male Engagement (Director of BME) will partner with leaders in the organization to set the strategic direction and operationalize the vision for creating meaningful and effective programming for Black male educators (BMEs). The Director of BME will develop structured programming for leadership development, mentoring, affinity group spaces, and convenings. The Director of BME will represent the organization on a policy level, collaborating with State and local leaders, and other leaders in the education space to advance research and policy related to Black males in education. The Director of BME must have an unwavering commitment to the power of investing in BMEs, demonstrate exceptional communication skills, especially public speaking, and prioritize strong relationship-building with people and organizations connected to our work. Well aligned candidates will bring a rich and innovative vision for engaging and supporting BMEs in exciting and meaningful ways.
Responsibilities include:
- Leading, participating in, and coordinating BME convenings such as our annual Black Male Educator Convening (BMEC) to increase the retention and recruitment of BMEs by providing safe, brave, and meaningful spaces consistent with Black men’s unique and specific needs and aspirations
- Developing and managing a structured leadership development program for Black male educators to include:
- Instructional development: Formulate plans that offer designated spaces to learn and improve instructional practices such as formal coaching, workshops, and instructional programming that meaningfully addresses the needs of Black males in education spaces
- Non-Instructional development: Build community with fellow Black male educators, cultivate a sense of belonging, and learn practical ways to address inner traumas that lead to shifts in mindsets and habits for BMEs in the classroom and as school leaders
- Developing and managing a mentorship program for BMEs
- Developing and managing affinity group spaces for BMEs that support BMEs in building a positive gender and racial identity and highlights issues connected to being a Black male in the educational justice movement
- Identifying opportunities for enhanced community engagement and partnerships; Developing a community strategy plan that addresses retention and recruitment for BMEs within their communities and provides meaningful resources and connections for BMEs
- Cultivating relationships and partnerships with education organizations, community-based organizations, businesses, and other non-profit agencies to highlight and address the various needs of Black male educators
- Collaborating with State/local leaders and other education leaders to advocate for and develop State and federal policy research; Participate in national research studies related to BMEs
- Fostering a productive and healthy dynamic with all internal and external stakeholders including staff, community partners, education organizations, other businesses, and political connections
- Other duties as assigned
Background and experience expectations:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years teaching experience, plus at least 3 years of experience in a leadership capacity - experience coaching and mentoring teachers and teacher leaders
- Have a deep commitment to The Center’s mission, vision, and core values
- Experience offering instructional and non-instructional support to others via online platforms
- Exceptional communication, public speaking, interpersonal skills; Must possess excellent facilitation and presentation skills
- Strong project management skills; Detailed oriented and organized with strong ability to successfully manage multiple projects
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships with a diverse stakeholder group - candidates must possess strong active listening with a high degree of empathy and openness
- Ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a collaborative team
Other work requirements:
- Must have access to a dedicated workspace, phone, and internet access
- Ability to physically perform duties above and to work in the required environmental conditions
- Travel required from time to time for in-person stakeholder meetings, conferences, and other convenings
