ROLE

The Director, Fund Investments focuses on identifying, evaluating and executing investments while leading due diligence assignments, investment portfolio management, regulatory compliance, risk management, and strategy development. He/she leads deal sourcing, evaluation, and execution while managing due diligence, portfolio oversight, compliance, and risk. He/she guides strategy development, presents to the investment committee, and manages the team. Representing the Fund’s interests, he/she collaborates across functions, delivering financial analysis and risk insights to advance MEDA’s impact investment goals in emerging markets, supporting sustainable poverty reduction.

To: Deputy Managing Director – Mastercard Foundation Africa Growth Fund

Status: Full-time, ideal start date to be in September 2025

KEY FUNCTIONS

Investment Due Diligence & Execution (40%)

  • Screen the potential investment vehicles based on the eligibility criteria set for the investment vehicles and recommendation to the investment committee.
  • Lead and manage the entire investment due diligence process for prospective investments, including qualitative analysis, quantitative and fund economic analysis based on set eligibility criteria.
  • Coordinate with other program partners to schedule due diligence exercises with the investment vehicles.
  • Negotiate and structure investment terms. Build fund economic models, review fund economics and support the investment vehicles in structuring the proposed investment.
  • Prepare a due diligence report and an investment memo with recommendations to the investment committee for approval.
  • Prepare and present detailed investment recommendations to the investment committee.

Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management (20%)

  • Provide comprehensive risk management reporting for MEDA’s investments, ensuring alignment with organizational policies and investment standards.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies, including monitoring risk exposure and portfolio diversification.
  • Support compliance checks and review of conditions precedent and conditions subsequent for new and ongoing investments.

Team Management & Development and Industry Engagement (20%)

  • Lead, mentor and develop a team of investment professionals.
  • Provide guidance on investment analysis, due diligence and financial modelling techniques.
  • Conduct performance reviews and support career progression for team members.
  • Foster a collaborative and high-performance team environment aligned with MEDA’s values.
  • Enhance the Fund’s reputation and relationships via industry engagement within the ecosystem.

Audit and Administrative Support (20%)

  • Coordinate and facilitate regular investment committee meetings, ensuring timely distribution of materials and documentation.
  • Support the preparation of investment impairments by reviewing accounting treatments, collaborating with corporate finance to ensure accurate reporting.
  • Assist in the preparation of required impairment documentation for auditors and board committees, ensuring compliance with financial reporting standards.

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

Education: Master’s degree in finance, Economics, Business Administration or a related field. MBA or CFA preferred. or related field.

Experience:

  • 13 + years of experience in private equity, venture capital or fund of funds, with a strong focus on investment analysis and due diligence.
  • Completion of CFA or working towards CFA Qualification/ master’s degree in finance or MBA considered an asset.
  • Understanding of private equity fund structures, legal documentation (LPAs) and industry best practices.
  • Debt fund experience.
  • Strong communication, presentation and interpersonal skills with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and persuasively.
