About the Position

Reporting to the Managing Director of External Affairs, the Director of Communications will play a crucial role in creating compelling and impactful written content that promotes and defines CBED’s mission, programming, competencies, and values to both internal and external stakeholders. The Director of Communications will develop and implement CBED’s communication strategy across various platforms with the goal of building and cultivating stakeholder engagement and advocacy through resonant and impactful content. The Director of Communications is expected to work cross-functionally and must be a strategic thought partner to all departments to effectively manage the day-to-day delivery of communications - including large-scale projects, compelling, powerful storytelling, and ad hoc requests. The ideal candidate for this position will be passionate about our mission of rebuilding a #BlackTeacherPipeline predicated on Black teaching pedagogical frameworks and through a Black historical lens to achieve educational and racial justice in our schools and is optimistic that we can make a difference with thoughtful and strategic communications.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with the Chief of Staff and Managing Director of External Affairs to develop and implement a strategic vision that highlights the work of the CEO & Founder and the organization's overall initiatives and impact

  • Prioritize priority projects, programs and initiatives, strategize the targeted audiences, actions, and communications channels.

  • Design and implement targeted communications plans and track their impact over time, using metrics and analytics to measure success and make data-driven adjustments.

  • Oversee the day-to-day management of all internal communications and external marketing efforts.

  • Develop and implement effective strategies to keep CBED staff and partners informed and engaged with our work and impact through storytelling and community

  • Create compelling content to engage and educate audiences across various channels, including testimonies, newsletters, blogs, graphics, social media content, press releases and other materials as needed.

  • Assist with website management, ensuring content is up-to-date, accurate, and aligns with our communication strategies.

  • Develop and execute digital strategies through targeted campaigns, including writing appeals and other calls-to-action to drive engagement and

  • Manage and drive online events and campaign rollouts, including performing outreach, marketing, and creating social sharing toolkits to maximize reach and impact.

  • Coordinate with various vendors, including website developers, marketers, and designers, to ensure streamlined and cohesive efforts across all communication

  • Collaborate with the team driving the fundraising campaign strategy to align communications and support fundraising efforts.

  • Proofread and coordinate the production of communication materials, ensuring high quality and consistency across all outputs.

  • Undertake additional projects or duties as assigned, supporting the overall goals and needs of the communications team and organization.

  • Serve as a “chief storyteller” by developing emotionally and intellectually engaging content tailored for multiple target audiences and organizational goals.

  • Translate ideas into powerful copy that drives action and complex issues into compelling and accessible content.

  • Create and execute inspirational calls to action that motivate and mobilize our community, stakeholders, and supporters to engage with and support our mission.

Background and experience expectations:

  • Deep commitment to CBED’s mission, vision, and core
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or related field; Master's degree is a plus.
  • 7-10 years of relevant communications experience, including digital
  • Proven experience in business writing, content creation, or similar
  • Strong leadership skills, including team management, coaching, and performance
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to tailor content for various audiences and formats.
  • Proficiency in multimedia platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and
  • Proficiency in Adobe Suites for website maintenance, and familiarity with graphic design and video development (Canva experience is helpful).
  • Knowledge of press and media relations practices is preferred but not
  • Ability to stay updated with mass media and popular culture
  • Strong collaboration skills, including working with cross-functional
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills to handle multiple projects and deadlines efficiently.
  • Proven experience in remote work and proficiency with remote work tools and technologies (e.g., Slack, Zoom, project management software).
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced startup environment, demonstrating flexibility, adaptability, and proactive problem-solving
