The Social Justice Learning Institute is hiring a
Social Justice Learning Institute (SJLI) is a non-profit organization located in both Los Angeles, CA and Houston, TX dedicated to improving the education, health, and well-being of youth and communities of color by empowering them to enact social change through research, training, and community mobilization. We build capacity for individuals and communities to advocate for their needs, train and build leaders, educate and empower youth and community members to identify and rectify injustice, and deliver effective programs, resources, and support that help advance our mission.
In support of the vision of the Social Justice Learning Institute, the Development Coordinator serves as a multidisciplinary position on the Houston team supporting various fundraising activities including donor prospecting, qualification and stewardship, special events, database management, direct mail, volunteer management, and other fundraising activities. This role also provides support to fundraising activities within the Houston metro area as needed. The ideal candidate will have the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, enjoy outreach and relationship building, and have the ambition to grow and thrive within the organization. The Development Coordinator is a strategic thinker who communicates professionally and effectively with volunteers, donors, and community stakeholders. This person is a team player with energy and drive.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Donor Communication:
○ Execute Houston donor engagement plan and work with the Regional Director and SJLI Development Team to coordinate and manage targeted donor communication strategies, such as lapsed donors and recurring donors.
○ Lead Houston donor recognition efforts, including special events coordination, planning and execution, coordinating in-kind donations, and assisting the Regional Director with projects outlined in the Houston Development plan.
● Database Management:
○ Manage all aspects of the donor database system, including gift entry, donor acknowledgements, personal thank you notes, reconciliation, and reporting.
● Grant and Institutional Fundraising:
○ Coordinate institutional and foundation fundraising efforts, including grant preparing organizational documents for foundation submission. Research and writing, maintaining a grants calendar, compiling reports, and
○ Assist Regional Director with institutional giving donor engagement efforts rapport building activities, etc. including but not limited to: meeting preparation, attending events, establishing
● Event Coordination:
○ Coordinate and execute logistical efforts for fundraising events, including venue selection, vendor management, and volunteer coordination.
● Collaboration and Innovation:
○ Contribute relevant ideas and opportunities for generating donor activity in Houston to the Regional Manager and SJLI Development team for consideration.
○ Collaborate with the SJLI Communications team to ensure consistent messaging in all Houston office collateral, content, and external efforts.
○ Liaise across departments, with significant collaboration with the Regional Director, their leadership team, programs, and finance teams.
● Other Duties as Assigned:
○ Undertake additional tasks and responsibilities as directed by the Regional Director to support the overall success of SJLI Houston Office.
QUALIFICATIONS:

● Strong commitment to SJLI’s mission and core values, and a desire to be part of a work environment and culture committed to social and racial justice.
● Minimum of 2-3 years of related work experience in nonprofit development/fundraising, preferably in a nonprofit or social justice-oriented organization.
● Bachelor’s Degree preferred or equivalent experience.
● Highly organized, thorough, and detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities.
● Proficiency in data management and reporting, and familiarity with CRM (eTapestry) and fundraising software (Classy) is a plus.
● Strong skill sets with Excel spreadsheets, data entry, and analysis.
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
● A self-starter and problem solver with the ability to take initiative and work independently.
● Ability to handle challenging and sensitive donor and member relations situations professionally and with discretion.
● Must be available for some weekend and evening responsibilities.
● Ability to adapt quickly to change, manage shifting priorities, and consistently meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
● Proven track record of taking initiative and continuously looking for ways to improve processes and workflows.
